Canberra Racing Club (CRC) were facing a water crisis in 2019 after a multi-year drought. Their source of water from Icon Water was being restricted. The water was essential for the minimising the dust exposure to their human and equine athletes that use their training facilities. CRC contacted Eco-Road Hero for dust mitigation that was also water efficient. Eco-Road Hero worked with the Canberra team to deploy Dust/Blokr® technology onto the sand based exercise tracks. This was completed using existing equipment and without any impact to the facility operations. Dust/Blokr® was developed by Cypher Environmental as an environmentally friendly dust control technology. Cypher are based in Winnipeg, Canada. Dust/Blokr® has zero chlorides and has been used in equine sport, aviation, mining, general roads and forestry Dust/Blokr® reduced the dust related complaints from 2-3 per week to ZERO. Canberra Racing Club reduced their water usage by 90% on the treated tracks. The total water saving since 2019 has been over 180 Megalitres across all the treated tracks. This is water saving equivalent to over 70 Olympic sized swimming pools. In Thailand 🇹🇭 , a destructive form of fishing known as pair trawling threatens fisheries, food security, livelihoods and ocean ecosystems. Despite representing only 5% of Thailand’s total fishing fleet, bottom trawlers were responsible for over 40% of its marine fishery landings in 2021. Pair trawling, a form of bottom trawling where two vessels tow one net between them, leaves vast areas of the seabed bare of life. The gear used is so effective at catching marine animals that it often crushes the fish caught. This trash fish – catch that is so degraded it is not fit for human consumption – is exported for use as fishmeal. A large % of trash fish are juvenile fish of economically valuable species, caught before they have a chance to reproduce. Every kilogram of trash fish sold by trawlers is robbing Thai fishers in the future to pay them a pittance today, destroying marine life in the process. This drives a downward spiral, undercutting future healthy fisheries. This widespread destruction has severe implications for small-scale fishers, who cannot compete with commercial fisheries. While reforms to Thailand’s catch monitoring systems have been made since 2015, the current system offers too much leeway, as there is no way to hold vessel operators who exceed the catch limit accountable. The current risk of reform rollback is not the answer, and would enable even more destruction to occur. The most destructive pair trawling fishing gears must be phased out, and transparency measures must be adopted and strengthened, not rolled back. These actions can deliver sustainable fisheries and livelihoods for the future. It is easier to point fingers at large commercial fishing companies, but discarded fishing line from a subsistence fishermen or hobby anglers is just as damaging. Whether it's commercial or recreational, ghost fishing gear has the same devastating impact on marine life. An entangled seal doesn't distinguish between the two, the outcome is always suffering and potential death caused by these lines.
