Negotiations are taking place among the Northeast Atlantic #CoastalStates to settle quota sharing agreements for #mackerel, Atlanto-Scandian #herring & #BlueWhiting.   The market wants to see these ecologically and economically important fish managed in a way that helps them meet their commitments to both consumers and the environment – only robust, long-term management will allow NAPA partners to source from these fisheries with confidence.   NAPA has called upon the Norwegian Government to meet with fish feed companies to discuss the situation facing one of NAPA’s main focuses: North East Atlantic blue whiting. As a key source of feed supporting Norway’s salmon aquaculture, any threat to this important pelagic stock is a threat to Norwegian salmon, and the wider seafood supply chain. Atlantic salmon: A Key Driver for the Seafood Trade Growth! 🐟   Salmon, particularly farmed Atlantic salmon, has significantly contributed to the expansion of the global fishery and aquaculture product trade in recent decades. It's a versatile, high-value specie that has successfully adapted to large-scale aquaculture, securing a strong and competitive position in the world market.   As described in 'The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022' by FAO, “growth in demand for salmon has outstripped other fish categories in almost every region, and Atlantic salmon aquaculture has risen to become one of the most profitable and technologically advanced industries'."   "In 2020, exports of salmon were worth USD 27.6 billion, led by Norway and Chile. Salmon and trout exports accounted for 18.4% of the value of all exported aquatic products in 2020, compared with 5.1% in 1976. The Global Roundtable on Marine Ingredients held an event in Lisbon on October 23, 2024. The event featured a line-up of speakers discussing good fishery management and impact monitoring. According to Jim Cannon, CEO of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), what has changed is what we are asking the supply chain to do, which is engage in the development of the industry’s regulations. Buyers can also insist that companies comply with government regulations to help with enforcement. The event concluded with a presentation from SFP's Paul Bulcock demonstrating the Feed Solutions Toolkit, a platform that empowers seafood supply chain companies to take action on aquaculture feed and all its ingredients.
