📢 Serena Williams has invested in 14 companies that have gone on to reach Unicorn status. 🔊 The GOAT🐐 in and outside the court 🎾. Her legacy extends far beyond her greatness on the tennis court. Strong in business, strong in sports, strong in character. A true role model. She’s an intelligent woman, and she’s a polyglot. Serena is fluent in French and speaks German, Italian and Mandarin, and is helping her daughters learn French, as well. Established in 2014, her venture capital fund prioritizes underrepresented founders, with over 85 companies in her portfolio, including healthcare startup HUED and edtech platform MasterClass as well as Noom, Impossible Foods, and others. That fourteen of these companies have gone on to reach unicorn status with a value of $1 billion or more is impressive. 🏆 Clearly, she is uber-fluent in the language of business and investment. I hope this encourages someone to expand their coast and never stop chasing their dreams. #TATHOTS #Afriphile vc: afrotech

📣 Female LPs - I know you are out there ✨ 🚀 When I was first entering venture, I was told repeatedly there were no female founders. I now know that is absolutely not true. A lot of the investments i've made are being led by a female founder and new research showed that a quarter (24%) of founders deciding to build startups in 2023 were women. 💃 Repeatedly during my venture career I was told there weren't that many women in VC. I now run a community of over 1,000 and Sifted keep a list of over 350+ female partners. So, again, not true. 💰Right now, I am being told there aren't any female LPs. I JUST DON'T BELIEVE IT. Below are some awesome female LPs to get started, please tag others in the comments and i'll update the list! Elodie Donjon and Nadya Petrova, CFA - European Investment Fund (EIF) Theresa Bardubitzki and Sabrina Senzel - KfW Chloe Dagnell and Omolade (Rachel) Adebisi - Isomer Capital Deepali Nangia - Speedinvest Dr. Golnaz Borghei - PwC Rebekah Brady - Ireland Strategic Investment Fund Lindsay Sharma - Industry Ventures Hayley Hand - Better Society Capital Christine Hockley - British Patient Capital Liz Bailey - British Business Bank

The emotional side of venture investing😱 - an often overlooked, but critical topic in fundraising. A team has always been an important consideration for VC investors. Yet, we typically focus more on product-market fit, traction, market size, and business model, and rarely talk about what exactly they are looking for, beyond track record and relevant experience. All the research to date has shown that it is the team that will ultimately determine whether or not an early-stage venture will succeed as it goes through all the ups and downs, dealing with competition, changing consumer preferences, and pivots. Join me and Mark Gold for an upcoming fireside chat to find out what investors are looking for and what you can do to develop those qualities. ➡️ Title: “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 - 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬?” 📅 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐞:June 27th 🕛 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞: 12 pm - 1 pm EST 📍 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Zoom ❗️ Free attendance, but the number of tickets is limited. We are honored to announce our special guest — Jeanne Mariani Sullivan. She is a veteran investor with over 25 years of investing experience. Sullivan is the CIO of The Arcview Group, building investment platforms under the Arcview banner and Co-Founder of the Arcview Collective Fund. She is a sought-after industry speaker on how to get funded in tech and in the cannabis sector - its complex (and ridiculous set of regulations). Jeanne has been a member of the Women’s Leadership Board at the Harvard Kennedy School and is an Athena Entrepreneur Fellow for Barnard College. She also served many years on the Board of Trustees of the New York Hall of Science and on the Global Board of Trustees of Astia, an organization that funds high-growth women entrepreneurs. Together we will share their invaluable insights on what VCs look for in founding teams. Get ready to learn about the key traits and strategies that can help you stand out and succeed! 🚨 Long post warning 🚨 In summary: Attended founders event by Lifted Ventures. Fantastic investment pitches, inspiring founders and speakers and broken glass walking! When my day started with a 4.45am alarm I didn't expect to be walking over broken glass by 3.30pm! 🤯 😯 However the intentions I set myself at the start of Lisa Clifford 🔥 Founder of The Meant for More Movement's very powerful session for founders meant I needed to act on them, after all "what's the worst that could happen by just going for it?" 🤔 So, with self-belief and courage (the intentions for my next career phase) I walked over the broken shards. What was it like? Sharp? Yes, definitely, but also very cathartic and emotionally freeing. I learnt a lot in those few seconds of crunching down the glass shards! I have been to a couple of events recently where its been great to immerse myself in knowledge building, and where every session delivered in many ways. 📍Insightful ✅️ 📍Powerful in content and tone ✅️ 📍Had investment pitches from female leaders really taking their businesses to the next level ✅️ 📍Making purposeful connections ✅️ 📍The building of communities right in front of me ✅️ 📍Haven't used the same faces/names for speakers and panels ✅️ Today was no exception. Congratulations to Helen Oldham and Jordan Dargue from Lifted Ventures on a fantastic first founders event 👏🏽👏🏽. Brilliant sessions and speakers all round! Adah Parris (she/her), Rachel Hannan, Zandra Moore Debra Leeves and many others - you definitely inspired the audience of founders today with your talks 😀 Congrats to pitch finalists Fozia Saleem from Magnitude Biosciences Ltd, Dr Chen Mao Davies from Anya Health and Kate Hawker from adventuro for your awesome and very polished pitches. Good luck with the fund raising. 📢 Calling all investors - look at these three! ☝🏾 I met some wonderful people today doing amazing and innovative stuff including Vickki B., Penelope Wilson, Bianca Spruit and Dr Zainab Bibi - let's keep it moving forwards and continue to be a part of the movement lifting female founders and scaling impactful businesses 🙌🏾

When it comes to breaking into #VC, there is nothing more important than building and tapping into your relationships. I loved including Nasir C. Qadree's story in Chapter 2 of my book. It may seem like an art, but there is a science to building and leveraging your network in venture capital and I hope this chapter helps shine a light on how to do it!
I’m so proud to share and champion my dear friend Allison Baum Gates, General Partner at SemperVirens Venture Capital . In her new book, Allison unpacks the often unorthodox path to breaking into venture capital. I’m so grateful that, in Chapter 2, she shares in detail my own journey of ideating and building Zeal Capital Partners into a $180+ million venture business. From growing up around entrepreneurs and activists in Atlanta, to owning my own coffee shop, to working with and investing in entrepreneurs globally and off the beaten path, becoming a fund manager as my life’s work was an easy progression. Thank you, Allison, for your leadership and friendship. I’m grateful to be on this important journey alongside you. #BreakingintoVC #FundManager #VentureCapital #Leadership Add this book to your desk, and purchase for your mentee https://lnkd.in/e3PPJwH9
