India has now witnessed 3 full waves and 2 'rising tides' of computing revolution. 🔵 The first one in the 90s gave birth to a nearly $300B IT/ITeS industry that has created millions of formal jobs, and many of India's most valuable brands - TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, and the like. 🔵 The second wave beginning late noughties/early 10s introduced hundreds of millions of Indians to digital products and services, online retail, and a new paradigm of content consumption. This wave catapulted India into the league of the world's largest startup ecosystems with multiple $10B+ valuation digital-native companies. 🔵 The third wave was special given it emanated from the joint vision of the government and some of India's most revered technocrats - India's globally famed Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) or the India Tech Stack. The scale of access, empowerment and democratization this stack has brought to 1B+ Indians is truly historic. May it be identity (Aadhaar, DigiLocker, DigiYatra), payments (UPI), data (Account Aggregation/ULI) or open network protocols (ONDC, OCEN). 🔵 Then the first 'rising tide' which has been lurking around the corner for almost a decade but has truly gained attention and prominence since 2021 is all things Deep Tech (AI, space tech, quantum computing, UAV tech, cybersecurity, frontier climate tech, chips, et al.). Given the depth of talent, an ocean of online data, supportive policymaking, and endless problems waiting to be solved, India can potentially be a key player on the global deep tech stage. However, investments in core infrastructure and IP-led research significantly lag China, the US, France, and the UK. 🔵 Now the second 'rising tide' is the one that has been a dark horse and is now promising to be the 2.0 act of India's global hegemony in IT/ITeS. India is now the world's Global Capability Centre (GCC) capital and APAC's data center hub! There are now 1600+ GCCs in India that drive a big part of strategy and innovation for the biggest global brands across BFSI, auto, retail, CPG, energy, and many more industries. The revenue generated from these India-based global development hubs is already 1/4th of India's IT/ITeS sector - around $70B. No wonder GCCs already employ 2M+ Indians! The installation of data centers by global tech giants has seen a similar upward trajectory even as India now boasts of the highest capacity at 950 MW in all of APAC. India will further add 850 MW to it in the 2024-26 period. That's just nuts! I can see a massive opportunity for local upskilling and talent placement companies to help the global GCCs and data center owners find local talent with specialized skills in cloud, data engineering, IT infrastructure, etc. Companies such as ANSR and HiyaMee are focusing on this use case but this market is too large to be served by a handful of players. Should the startups targeting GCC/DC talent development/placement be one of the next big investment areas for VCs?

As we stand on the brink of a major disruption with the rise of genAI across all industries and functions, it is surprising to see that many companies have yet to begin their digital transformation journey.. I recently had some conversations with businesses in various sectors.. some common reasons for not starting digital journey: - "Don't know where to start" - "It will be very expensive" - "Don't know whom to trust" - "Don't have a technical team" - "Data security is a concern" - Fear of the unknown These are very basic reasons, there could be more ..but the challenge is they are missing on crucial time, more importantly leveraging the power of technology to drive innovation and growth.. It seems like the companies that are already tech-savvy are getting even richer in IT, but those who are less technologically inclined are falling further behind.. I believe that Indian companies should come together to support and collaborate with each other to help kickstart the digital transformation journey for all businesses.. we all should work towards creating a more level playing field and ensuring that no one gets left behind in this digital age.. This will help us reach our national goal of a 10 trillion economy before 2030..
