This is one of the books I was involved in and could have been one of the writers with Britt Baatjes, Ivor Baatjes, David Balwanz, Anne Harley and Sonya Leurquain-Steyn. The project research covered 8 of the 9 provinces and was conducted by the Education Policy Consortium which is made of the following entities: - Centre for Integrated Post-School Education & Training (CIPSET) based at NMU - Centre for Education Policy Development (CEPD) based in JHB - Nelson Mandela Institute for Education & Rural Development (NMI) based at UFH - Research on Education & Labour (REAL) based at Wits, and - Centre for Education Rights & Transformation (CERT) based at UJ. Synopsis The post-school education and training system in South Africa has been the focus of much attention since the establishment of the Department of Higher Education and Training in 2009. In the context of deepening inequality, poverty and unemployment, the need for a humanising, liberating and critical approach to learning and pedagogy in post-school education is becoming urgent. The rural and urban voices that speak in this book tell us that the current system is out of touch with the ways in which they are making a life. Learning for Living challenges policy makers, researchers, educators and civil society organisations to think critically about the relationship between post-school education and the world of work, and about how to transform the post-school system to better serve the needs and interests of rural and urban communities. It issues a call to action, and proposes key principles to inform an alternative vision of post-school learning. #research #work #society #learning

Too many plans in our country fail because of insufficient consideration of context, capacity and capability. Teaching children to read has been no exception. This week in the Daily Maverick I share my reflections on the National Reading Report. In this piece I highlight the story of Sobral, the early successes of Funda Wande, Zazi iZandi and others - and critically identify what still needs to happen in South Africa if every child is to be able to read by the age of 10 (or earlier!). No surprises here, but to resolve the crisis I think we're going to need: 👨🏫 a contextually relevant and evidence based strategy that is centred on the classroom 🕵♂️ a rigorous implementation plan 💶 a budget to support the robust implementation of the strategy 📈 low stakes, standardised reading assessments that help us to learn, iterate and identify new ways to improve learner’s literacy levels. Incidentally - together with NASCEE and a range of NPO's Proteus Advisory is busy trying to figure out what civil society can do to tackle the crisis alongside government. What do you think we can do to turn the ship around? #readingmatters #education #educationreform #educationalequity https://lnkd.in/dqMhHC87
