There were important wins for reproductive justice advocates last night at the state level: ➡️ The first total abortion ban to be struck down at the ballot box ➡️ Expanded abortion access for Medicaid recipients and public employees ➡️ Stronger protections for abortion in state after state after state where grassroots organizers poured everything they had into defending the right to reproductive healthcare. Last night’s successful abortion ballot measures will change and save lives. They showed us what grassroots organizers can accomplish — even as ballot measure losses in Florida and Ohio showed us what they’re up against. Read the blog: https://lnkd.in/duzFvpzQ

Abortion Fund Of Ohio has seen a 400% increase in need since the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Why are abortion funds being abandoned in the long-term strategy to expand and protect abortion access? Where is the sustained backing for the grassroots organizations tirelessly assisting abortion seekers in overcoming the numerous socioeconomic hurdles preventing their access to abortion care? Abortion funds are the ones ensuring people are able to receive the abortion care they want, need and deserve, with dignity and love, regardless of a court decision. https://lnkd.in/grBrBWWP

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: There is nothing “pro-life” about abortion bans. As The Intercept reports, a recent study out of Tulane University found that in states with multiple abortion restrictions, the rate of intimate partner homicides against women and girls ages 10 to 44 rose by a chilling 3.4% for each restriction enforced. Another study they cited found that suicide rates have increased among reproductive-age women, with new reproductive restrictions associated with a 5.81% higher annual suicide rate compared to pre-enforcement years. Research like this underscores the dangerous and potentially deadly consequences of abortion bans and it SHOULD NOT be ignored. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eAAC2ZPe

Today #SCOTUS upheld access to FDA-approved abortion pill, Mifepristone. Access to safe and legal abortion services is not simply a partisan or political campaign issue. It is an issue negating hospital emergency rooms and healthcare providers’ capacity for delivering timely, essential health care. And we cannot lose sight on the full spectrum of women’s healthcare. I have said it before and will say it again: ➡ This is an equity issue. ➡ This is a workforce issue. ➡ This is a healthcare issue. ➡ This is a women’s rights issue. ➡ This is a medical training issue. Though the high court made its decision today, up to 15 states have pending ballot measures related to reproductive rights for this 2024 elections. Depending on which state you live and work in, you and your loved ones may still be at risk. https://lnkd.in/g6vNj5fu ________ Stay informed. Stay engaged. 5 things we don’t know about abortion in the US (but could with better reporting): How many abortions? How many women harmed by abortion? How many late term abortions? How many mail order abortions? How many babies born alive? According to this article put out by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, Oklahoma and Minnesota were ranked one and two in the country, respectively, for the quality and timeliness of their state abortion reporting, but there is still so much across the country that goes unreported. https://lnkd.in/gqSn4kzC

Today it's The Nation but this is my plea to ALL JOURNALISTS to please STOP using this framing. We are not "underground". Plan C Pills #AbortionWithoutBorders Shout Your Abortion Women Help Women, Aid Access, Just The Pill and more are loud and proud. Please stop implying that we are hiding. A reminder also that women of color have asked that we stop referring to abortion networks as part of an "underground railroad" as we are not 1. underground, 2. a railroad or 3. helping people escape being owned by other humans. Press - abortion pills are safer than viagra and safer than paracetamol. Those of us facilitating abortions outside of the system have existed for YEARS (waves to the National Network of Abortion Funds, going for at least 35 years now . . .). We are not hiding from the establishment. We are giving proactively and loudly working outside of it to help each other get abortions. https://lnkd.in/eYZRjDtJ

My latest article. Bottom line: the proponents of the abortion on demand amendment are lying now. As stated previously, https://lnkd.in/e5pQRyPz, even persons with nuanced views on abortion should vote against the extravagant abortion amendment. If my last article left any doubt in the mind of anybody, the doubt should be resolved against those who would lie to advance their outrageous proposal to extend abortions through (and beyond) the second trimester. https://lnkd.in/eRsmtb8y

Women’s access to reproductive #healthcare, including abortion, was among the issues presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump addressed in Tuesday’s debate. At the Urban Institute, we rely on #evidence. And when it comes to abortion, the evidence is clear: access to abortion improves women’s lives. Read this Urban Wire piece to discover what the #research shows and better understand what abortion access means for women’s income, health, career, and more. https://urbn.is/3ZhJMHV

2024 was yet another year of significant change for the abortion access landscape. States hostile to abortion have doubled down on increasingly extreme restrictions while states committed to reproductive freedom have done the opposite, further entrenching the reality that where you live often determines your ability to access abortion care. While we saw many harmful policies enacted in the past year, we have continued to see important progress in states dedicated to expanding and improving comprehensive insurance coverage of abortion, particularly for Medicaid enrollees. This blog will recap the major changes at the state level, including new coverage mandates for Medicaid enrollees and in private plans, cost-sharing prohibitions, and other efforts to improve access. - We believe with Trump at the helm, he will enact draconian laws that will outlaw abortion outright nationally as his political apparatus and his surrogates tout... - At the same time, even with Kamala Harris at the helm, an amendment to codify a woman's right to an abortion into our constitution could prove daunting because Democrats require a sizable majority in both the House and Senate to move forward... - Also, her suggestion to rid us of the filibuster (to a simple Senate majority vote) historically has proven difficult... - The Biden Administration proposed a vote by the legislature to appoint four new justices to the Supreme Court who may be amenable to the abortion issue. Many may see this as political, as when attempted by The FDR Administration; a move to 'stack' the court... Consider: 'A judicial 'procedural' upheaval; not a judicial 'political' upheaval.'... 'Solely the female justices of the Supreme Court alone must decide cases related to 'Womens Reproductive Health' for their fellow 'sisterhood' in the citizenry, while their male counterparts either recuse, or even abstain from such cases.'... empathyequalsjustice.com (Four Pages - Three Minute Read) Reference: Thomas Doyle - 'Top' Featured Post - #KamalaHarris
Oregon has served as a reproductive health care haven for those in states with strict abortion bans. But advocates are still concerned about access. This collaboration with OPB is part of The 19th News Network’s Abortion on the Ballot series.

Why did it take 20 years for the FDA to approve the abortion pill mifepristone after it was developed in 1980? Why did mifepristone remain difficult to obtain for decades after FDA approval? Why has the rate of abortion pill usage in the US trailed most European nations? Why was mifepristone, a drug safer than Tylenol, more heavily restricted than opioids during the COVID-19 pandemic? Why and how did the number of people having abortions increase after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, despite half of states banning or restricting abortion? These questions and more are answered in my new book, Abortion Pills: U.S. History and Politics, now available open access from Amherst College Press. https://lnkd.in/gTWNHYGw
