"The language industry is changing faster than ever... and we are very proud of our own innovations. The Language Services [Office] is driving advancement in language services and AI adoption, and we are there not just to absorb the knowledge from our colleagues but also contribute our own stories as pioneers in the federal government." In this short clip, Claudia Tebay from the US Department of State talks with LocWorld's Donna Parrish about the areas of interest that her team are excited about at the upcoming #LocWorld52 in Monterey later this month and the challenges of implementing new technologies in their workflows. In the presentation, Claudia is "eager to talk about how we tackle these obstacles, how we navigated internal pushbacks, the legal frameworks... We will share specific use cases from our diplomatic content... but also our localization content, which has steadily grown as the demand for multilingual websites in federal agencies increases." Claudia will be co-presenting the session titled "Embracing Technology: Transforming Governmental Language Services for Modern Diplomacy" with Dr. Yun-hyang Lee on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at LocWorld52 Conference in Monterey, California. The Silent Challenge: Africa's AI Language Barrier 🌍🤖 At the 6th Privacy Symposium Africa, a powerful moment revealed a critical challenge facing our continent's technological future. When delegates were asked to translate "artificial intelligence" into their native languages, an unexpected silence filled the room. This wasn't just a linguistic gap - it was a profound illustration of the deeper barriers preventing Africa's full technological integration. Language is more than words. It's about understanding, accessibility, and cultural connection. How can we truly democratize AI if we can't even articulate its concept in our own tongues? This moment challenges us to ask: • How can we make technological innovation truly inclusive? • What steps must we take to bridge linguistic and technological divides? • Are we creating solutions that speak to ALL Africans, not just a select few? The solution isn't just translation - it's meaningful localization and genuine cultural engagement with emerging technologies. Africa's technological future depends on our ability to make innovation speak our languages - literally and metaphorically. #AIInAfrica #TechnologyInclusion #AfricanInnovation #LanguageTechnology #DigitalTransformation

It was a pleasure to be a part of the Imminent Unconference in Rome. I was particularly excited that one of my suggestions received so much engagement: Storytelling in the Localization Industry 🔑 “Storytelling is not the term narrative. To me, narrative is like allowing you to control something. Storytelling, I’m inviting you to be engaged and inviting you to listen to my story.” 📌 The narrative around AI is often fear-driven, but the true focus should remain on enhancing human communication. 📌 The industry’s relevance lies in its ability to facilitate understanding and connection across cultures. 📌 Bridging the gap between decision-makers and linguists can highlight the continuous need for skilled professionals.

And here is Christos Ellinides to tell you something about the importance of languages in Europe.
Director-General for Translation at the European Commission [Providing Language and AI-based services]
Happy European Day of Languages! Καλή Ευρωπαϊκή Ημέρα Γλωσσών! For us here in DGT every day is a language day, but every 26 September we share the celebration with all of Europe. In an online event focusing on the latest news on Europeans and their languages, I share the stage with Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen and Genoveva Ruiz Calavera to talk about the work we do in the European Commission regarding languages. Here is my message (in the video), a welcome opportunity to explain the importance of multilingualism in the European Union and how DG Translation safeguards it through translation, editing, data, language technology, Artificial Intelligence and more. You can watch the conference anytime from noon on 26 September: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eE--JP37 👈. #xl8 #multilingualism #europeancommission #translation #interpretation #EUInstitutions #education #TEF2024 #TranslatingEurope #EMTnetwork #AI #EU #DigitalEurope #ClearWriting #PlainLanguage #EDLangs #languageSeason #celebratingLinguists #DGTranslation

📢 All Ukrainian speakers wanted! 🇺🇦 Whether you are a language professional, a fluent speaker, or learned some Ukrainian from your refugee neighbor — your experience is valuable! 👇 As the fuss about AI and LLMs replacing human translators keeps on it is high time to see this competition in the flesh and try to decide the winner. I hope you still remember the experiment we did together with Jiří Toman, Cyclinguist™. Now, we decided to continue and we are asking you to help. BTW, check out his similar request for Czech 🇨🇿 here: https://lnkd.in/e-cNbrP5 There are 4 translations below, only 1 is done by human, the rest are from Gemini AI, Google Translate, and DeepL. Please help to find out which one of the translations in the carousel is made by a human. Just add a comment with the translation number under the post. If you don’t speak Ukrainian, you can still be helpful by tagging a Ukrainian speaker that you know in the comments below. The more participants we have the more valuable and precise results we will get. In a week, I’ll analyze the results and share them with you in my next post! Thanks everyone for participating! Your opinion really matters!

Pangeanic will implement AI Transcription at the Spanish Parliament https://bit.ly/4f0wYtr 🚀 This is the first time that #AI will be used in national parliamentary transcriptions. 💡 But it’s not the first time for Pangeanic – we have been providing transcription services to the Parliament of the Valencian Community since 2021! Watch video here: https://bit.ly/3OvhW4n Now, we will transcribe multilingual sessions, debates and question—answers between #government and different political parties in #Spanish #Catalan #Basque #Galician implementing advanced technological solutions for transcribing sessions in the different co-official languages. 🌍 Implementing AI technology in parliamentary transcriptions represents a significant advance in modernizing #Congress, which will streamline documentation processes and make parliamentary work more efficient. 🗣️ European countries often have multiple official languages and regional dialects that must be accurately captured in parliamentary proceedings. For instance, Belgium operates in Dutch, French, and German, while Switzerland manages four official languages. This linguistic complexity creates a significant challenge for traditional transcription methods. Finland manages Finnish and Swedish in its parliamentary documents, whilst Ireland could facilitate both English and Irish language transcriptions. 🔜 The use of AI in parliamentary transcriptions not only marks a milestone in the modernization of Spanish #democratic institutions but also positions the Spanish Parliament (Congreso de los Diputados) at the forefront of implementing new technologies to improve the efficiency and transparency of its processes. 🌟 This digital transformation at the heart of Spanish democracy promises to significantly improve the accessibility and speed of documenting parliamentary sessions, benefiting both political representatives and citizens. At the heart of this transformation lies a significant leap forward in democratic transparency. 🌐 #AI #Transcription #Democracy #Transparency #Pangeanic
