Day 1 / City Canvas Symposium - Public Art, Urban Play and Creative Sports: An interesting conversation today about the 'urban exclusion problem' in our cities. Development and planning have failed to capture and cater to the needs of our youth and young adults, often resulting in them being marginalised and relegated to outlying skate parks for social interaction. Our public spaces are developed for 'adultification', with bland features that de-risk public assets and make them irrelevant to young people. If we flip our thinking, public spaces and assets can serve multiple purposes to benefit our whole society. A public artwork can increase liveability and cultural identity, but if it's also a skatable asset, then instantly, it becomes more relevant to broader part of our community. By integrating active infrastructure into the fabric of our cities, we can foster true inclusivity and create more connected communities. Thanks for the insights Sanné Mestrom Felicity Fenner Indigo Willing Nadia Odlum and thank you to Aunty Ding for the very special Welcome to Country #artplayrisk #publicart #publicdomain #urbanplanning #liveability #inclusivity #industrialdesign

Today we celebrate the birthday of Jan Gehl, one of the greatest names in human-centered urbanism! Gehl teaches us that the best cities are those designed for people and with their participation. His work transforms urban planning into a collaborative effort, where the focus is on ensuring that the urban space reflects the needs and desires of its inhabitants. One of the most effective ways to engage the community is by using technologies and gamification to visualize and co-create urban solutions. These tools allow residents to actively participate in the planning process, making it easier to understand and increasing engagement. In my professional journey, I have applied the principles of community involvement that Gehl advocates, using gamification to promote active participation. I believe that well-planned cities do not emerge from great ideas alone, but from the integration of community voices, fostering a true sense of belonging and citizenship. #JanGehl #UrbanPlanning #CitiesForPeople #ParticipatoryUrbanism #Sustainability #CommunityEngagement #Gamification

Whose claims on space take priority? This was the question that kept cropping up at last week's Festival of Place, whether children versus cars 🧒🚗 or men versus women ♂♀ Tim Gill argued that our streets have become urban battlegrounds, where children's 'right to roam' has drastically decreased over generations as the prevalence of the car has increased. In fact, the issue has become so pronounced that he believes that children are now an 'indicator species', in that their presence is a sign of a healthy neighbourhood. Sadly, I don't often see children playing around the streets of #London or indeed #Chelmsford (where I live), such is the dominance of the car. Is it any different in other parts of the country, or in more rural areas?! And then there's the issue of women's safety in our cities. Yemi Aladerun believes we need a paradigm shift to design truly inclusive spaces, but Marina Milosev pointed out that we have policies to design equitably, we just don't know how to implement them! Holly Lewis quoted Leslie Kern's famous line 'no amount of good lighting is going to abolish the patriarchy' - instead she called for a peer-to-peer approach to engagement to ensure that any design solution is completely informed by a particular community's needs. It's great to see the issue of spatial justice - in whatever form that takes - get more airtime in forums like this. Kudos to Christine Murray and James MacLeod at The Developer and Festival of Place for curating such a brilliant event. #builtenvironment #cities #placemaking #transport #inclusivedesign #spatialjustice

Arts and culture can contribute to the regeneration of degraded urban areas, but as change occurs and property values rise, there is a risk that they will be replaced by more profitable uses. “….a movement of arts nonprofits [that] are taking a more direct interest in real estate in order to preserve their communities and livelihoods. In Chicago, San Francisco and Boston, these groups are adopting unique organizational and financial structures to survive in overheated real estate markets. These arts models give artists more control over their place within these neighborhoods, but also emphasize stability and cooperation over resale value.” #urbanregeneration #urbandevelopment #sustainability #realestatedevelopment #realestate #urbanplanning

Thesis title | Enhancing Park Quality: Inclusive and Therapeutic Design for All Imagine a public space designed to help children with social difficulties, where they thrive, connect, and grow towards better health and well-being. This project aims to create an inclusive and therapeutic park in the town of Islip, catering to individuals of all ages, with a special focus on those with neurodiverse conditions and disabilities. The park will be a stimulating environment engaging all five senses through educational tools and interactive games, promoting socialization, and creativity. We're implementing a unique pattern-based approach using adaptable shapes and rules to achieve a versatile landscape. This strategy allows us to apply the park design to various lands efficiently, ensuring our vision can be realized regardless of specific site characteristics. #NYIT #Architecture #LandscapeDesign #TheraputicDesign #Inclusivity #Equality #Userfriednly #Accessibility #ShapeGrammare

Sydney friends, check this out ~ 🛹🏃🏼♀️💚 CITY CANVAS: Public Art, Urban Play & Creative Sports 17th October – 18th October 2024 University of Sydney, Camperdown CITY CANVAS is an interdisciplinary symposium that envisions the city as a dynamic playground, where public art and creative urban sports converge to create rich potential for urban play, with a special focus on the needs of young adults and other non-traditional users of public space. Co-hosted by ART/PLAY/RISK (led by artist and academic Dr. Sanné Mestrom with Nadia Odlum), in partnership with the Skate, Create, Educate, and Re-Generate initiative (led by skateboarder and scholar Dr. Indigo Willing), this event challenges us to transcend traditional boundaries and reimagine our urban landscapes. Building on last year’s symposium "Play beyond Playgrounds,” which focused on the child’s right to the city, CITY CANVAS turns the focus to the civic agency of young adults to ask: How can we harness the transformative power of public art and creative urban sports to empower adolescents and create more inclusive cities? And how can we use these mediums to address the underrepresentation of young women, non-binary individuals, and other non-traditional users of urban spaces? Through keynotes, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, we'll explore how public art can serve as a key methodology to transform typically unwelcoming urban landscapes into inclusive canvases for creative expression and play, particularly for young adults and non-traditional participants in urban sports. The CITY CANVAS symposium helps us understand HOW and WHY we need to reimagine spaces and empower young adults of all backgrounds to thrive and grow in our increasingly high-density cities. Join us in this vital conversation as we paint a new vision for our urban future.

🔥 📢 📣 Guess - WHO HAS TWO THUMBS ( YET ) AND A UNHABITAT WIN IN HIS POCKET ?? 🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️ My artwork just won in the Inclusive and Sustainable Communities category for , "Equitable Urban Dreams," at the My Urban Vision digital art competition 2024 by UNHABITAT ! 💥 🎉 **Winners’ Announcement: MY URBAN VISION Digital Art Competition 2024** 🎉 🧨 Here is my description: My artwork represents cities as a net of interconnected spaces, highlighting cracks that symbolize urban inequities. It critiques the assumption that cities cater mainly to adult, male, white-collar, out-of-town car users, leaving women and other groups marginalized. I advocate for a balanced urban sphere shared equally by all genders, ages, and demographics. Inclusivity in urban planning is crucial for sustainability. My art calls for rethinking city structures to ensure public spaces, energy, and resources are accessible to everyone, fostering truly equitable and resilient cities. 🚻 🧑🧒 😝 😁 😍 It’s time we stop designing cities for just the adult, male, white-collar, out-of-town car users, leaving everyone else in the dust! My mission? 🚀 🎯 🏹 - To design playful urban spaces where all genders, ages, and demographics feel free and be interactive, expressive . Because who doesn’t want a city that caters to everyone—especially when it includes diverse needs and desires 🍕🌳 Check out the winners and see what all the fuss is about [here](https://lnkd.in/g4MjdXkf)!
