Q: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞? A: 10.18 seconds (x2) When you own an electric vehicle, this is a question you get a lot. Of course, I know the specs on our Tesla Model 3 Performance, which is about 25 minutes from 5% to 80% SOC at a Supercharger, and about 5 hours from 5% to 80% SOC on a 48A AC charger. But that doesn't tell you much as, like most people, I almost always charge at home. Which means we plug it in at night, and unplug in the morning, just like we do with our phone. After that, I don't really care: it's always full in the morning. Anywhere between a 1 minute and 11 hour charge is exactly the same. So, my daughter and I made this short video of how long it takes us to plug in. The answer? 10.18 seconds Times two to include unplugging in the morning, or 20.36 seconds. That's way better than the 5 to 10 minutes you need to set aside to refuel you gas vehicle. It also doesn't stink like toxic chemicals, there's no lineup and you don't have to deal with the weirdo 3 pumps over who looks like they're going to mug you. And the best part? It costs less than 5 bucks. Of course, when we're on the road at a Supercharger it takes the same time. Why? We're usually getting lunch or coffee. Though, in truth, it can take a good deal longer and be much more painful and costly as I have to drag my wife and daughters out of the nearby shops to get on the road again. "But Dad, they're having a 50% off sale!" There goes the gas savings..... Does this align with your charging experience of your EV? New EV drivers and future EV owners need fewer hurdles to go electric. The transition to a standardized charging connector (Tesla NACS) has begun, but that transition isn't immediate. I see dealership sales personnel struggle in understanding and then teaching new EV drivers about the multiple connector types and which ones to use. Those building out charging networks today are scratching their head when choosing which connectors to outfit their chargers with, as the transition to the NACS connector is still far from complete. ChargePoint has introduced the "Omni Port," a solution that natively includes adapters for Tesla's NACS, J1772, and CCS1, using automated connecting hardware. An EV driver would have their vehicle info added to their ChargePoint app profile, and when activating a charging session, the charger identifies and automatically attaches the required connector. Retrofit pricing details are still pending. Will it be cheaper than swapping out a DCFC cable and connector? Will this functionality integrate with apps like Circuit Electrique (Hydro Québec), ChargeHub, Blue Oval Network (Ford Motor Company), and work with Plug'n Charge capable vehicles? 🚗 Fast Charging EV Batteries: Game-Changer? 🚗 Exciting news from the UK! Nyobolt's new electric car battery has charged from 10% to 80% in just 4 minutes and 37 seconds. This is a significant improvement over current Tesla superchargers, which take 15-20 minutes for the same level. This rapid advancement could drastically reduce "range anxiety" for EV users and make electric cars more appealing to the masses. 🎉 However, the road ahead isn't without hurdles. The live demo faced challenges like the UK heatwave and equipment failures, resulting in less than optimal conditions. Additionally, despite their impressive charging times, these batteries are reliant on superfast 350kW DC chargers, which are not yet widespread across the UK. Also, while the charging speed is remarkable, the range achieved was 120 miles compared to Tesla's 200 miles. Could this be the turning point for electric vehicle adoption? Unavailable chargers—because they are broken or in use-- have been an EV industry black eye. Automakers and charging companies are trying to change that. Recurrent studied EV fast charging on over 12,500 Tesla vehicles in the US to learn if the battery management system (BMS) prevents damage to the battery during EV fast charging. The results, released last year, were shocking ⚡ They compared cars that fast charge at least 90% of the time to cars that fast charge less than 10% of the time and the results showed no statistically significant difference in range degradation.
