A recent study by the HR Research Institute, 'HR.com's Future of Career Development and Mobility 2024-25', has unveiled a significant gap in employee career development programs across many organizations. Only 20% of companies have reached the top two levels of program maturity, highlighting a crucial need for improvement in supporting employee growth. The research highlights concerning deficiencies in career development and internal mobility efforts. A mere 37% of organizations consider themselves effective in career development, while just 42% report success in internal mobility initiatives. Furthermore, only 22% of organizations offer enough employee development opportunities to keep up with workforce demands. 'Managers are uniquely positioned to drive employee development, but they need the right training, tools, and incentives to succeed,' said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. The study found that in 34% of organizations, managers actively discourage internal movement to retain high performers, while only 15% have managers equipped with the necessary skills to develop employees. The findings underscore a pressing need for organizations to prioritize career growth initiatives, particularly as employee expectations for development opportunities continue to rise. The report offers actionable insights and recommendations for HR professionals to strengthen their career development strategies. #employeecareer #careerdevelopment #hrresearch

Avenues for advancement are so important! But so is the communication around those avenues. That’s why managers and employees need to set aside time for career conversations. Every manager should know the next step that each of their direct reports wants to take. Managers should also connect them to practical, actionable advice on what they need to do to take those steps. Just today, my manager and I practiced a hypothetical scenario I might face if I became an editorial team manager, which is the next step I want to take. This type of practice has become routine for me because over the past few years, my managers and I have regularly communicated about my career goals and how to achieve them. It’s one major reason I feel confident I’ll succeed in this type of role right from the start. I’m really lucky in my #LifeAtGartner to have managers who actively support my career development. So what about you? When was the last time you had a career conversation with your manager or a direct report?
