in the year 2019, we produced around 53.6 million tonnes of electronic waste, less than 20% of which was recycled. Most of this ends up in landfills, slowly percolating into the soil that sustains us - filling it with heavy metals and toxins that are ruinously harmful to our kidneys and central nervous systems! A big chunk of it ends up in oceans where its contributing to the catastrophic and terrifying collapse of the largest ecosystem on this planet - crucially important to maintain the precarious balance required to sustain the web of life! With IoT technology growing at the rate it is, we will soon have hundreds of billions of sensors all around the world - the idea of these sensors being battery-powered - even say 25% of them - should send chills down your spine! It's truly a blood curdling thought - the ecological collapse we're looking at unless we take urgent collective action is nothing short of cataclysmic!
