BC's Indigenous-led housing project is set to bring 1,600 affordable rental homes, both on and off reserves, to address the housing needs of Indigenous communities. This initiative is important because it directly addresses the housing crisis that disproportionately affects Indigenous communities in British Columbia. Indigenous people face significant barriers to securing safe, affordable housing, both on and off reserves. This project not only provides much-needed shelter but also promotes culturally supportive environments, which are essential for fostering healing, community, and resilience within these communities. Furthermore, it’s a major step toward reconciliation. By prioritizing Indigenous leadership and culturally sensitive housing, the government acknowledges and begins to rectify long-standing inequalities. The investment also underscores a broader commitment to improving the lives of Indigenous families, elders, and individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have access to housing that respects their cultural heritage and community needs. This type of development sets a precedent for how housing solutions can contribute to both social justice and economic stability, making it a model for future efforts in addressing housing needs within marginalized populations. #AffordableHousing #IndigenousHousing #Reconciliation #BCHousing https://lnkd.in/gUmU5jtH

This looks promising! Along with increasing the supply of safe, secure and affordable housing options, there is a need for innovative housing models such as Youth Foyers which can provide more supported accommodation options for young people leaving care. We would also like to see social housing prioritised for care leavers and for young people’s voices to be included in the housing reform. The importance of understanding housing experiences at the local level The Living in Australia 2024: National Community Views Survey - Key Insights Report draws on the views of the more than 5,000 people who participated in .id’s annual Living in Australia Community Views Survey collected across April and May 2024, and speaks to four themes we feel are critical to improving living standards across the nation. The issue of affordable and decent housing in Australia is a topic that resonates deeply across our society. While few would dispute its critical role in our national prosperity, the way we tackle housing challenges remains contentious. Housing is not just a roof over our heads; it serves as both an enabler and a barrier, shaping the lives of individuals and families for generations - credit Jacquie Norton 11th Nov 2024 What this means for governments and industry in Australia The provision of affordable decent housing stands as the single most significant barrier to improving quality of life for many Australians. It is essential that we advocate for solutions that bridge the gap between values and experiences in housing. The growing polarisation around housing will only make it harder to solve a complex and challenging issue. This polarisation distracts from the fundamental issue we must tackle: how do we accommodate a growing population in a way that is equitable, sustainable, and enhances quality of life? Good planning makes great communities, and at the Planning Institute of Australia, we will continue to speak up for the value of planning and planners. Thanks to The Fifth Estate for the opportunity to share some thoughts on this important issue. #planningmatters #ittakesaplanner
Too many Australians can’t afford to buy, rent, or access social housing and emergency accommodation, writes Matt Collins, CEO of the Planning Institute of Australia. Instead of allowing housing to become the next culture war, we should elevate good planning and reaffirm its fundamental role in creating great communities. https://lnkd.in/eaZV8dty #urbanplanning #housingaffordability #housingcrisis

A critical need to address Australia's public housing shortage swiftly and effectively is evident. The only way to solve Australia's worst shortfall of enough Public Housing is to build more "faster." Unfortunately, the Federal Government of Australia is struggling and relies on slow, inefficient custom construction methods. There are vast shortages of tradies, and there is no scalable plan to solve Australia's worst shortfall of enough Public Housing in history. With an official waiting list of around 500,000 individuals and potential increases, the report recommends urgently building 750,000 social dwellings in the next 20 years. This is crucial but not enough to solve the chronic shortage of availability over the next ten years. Today, across Australia, over 5 million rental-stressed tenants lack long-term tenancies and face unsustainable rentals. Hundreds of thousands of Australians pay up to 60% of household income towards rent, which is not sustainable. Fast-track solutions are imperative to overcome this crisis. More than slow custom construction methods and shortages of skilled tradies are needed. Looking at successful solutions from Scandinavian countries, advanced modular construction platforms like Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) can sustainably accelerate building processes. Innovative construction methods are essential to meet Australia's growing social housing demand. The Thrive Alliance, led by a proven "Placemaker" with proven capability in urban CLT projects, offers fast-to-market solutions, creating "inclusive" residential-grade mid-rise apartments and unique urban villages, fostering community bonds where residents look out for each other nearby, walking distance to existing heavy and light railway infrastructure. As a proven "Placemaker" over the decades in all previous major urban projects won at either State or Local Government tenders, I have set aside between 30% and 50% for affordable housing with no mandatory requirements, just through my initiative and "sense of social responsibility." #HousingCrisis #PublicHousing #SustainableConstruction #advancedmodular #sustainability #inclusiveness #residentialgrade #midrise #townhouses #Placemaker #Harropfactor
