Estimating Tasks (Developer Perspective) Developers often don't want to make commitments about deliverables, mostly due to hesitancy about requirements and the uncertain nature of software development. While I agree with many arguments supporting that side, I also understand clients, who can't effectively manage their business when everything tends to fall under this category of "unknown". In the next post, I'll describe the client perspective, but let's start with the developer's side first. The complexity of even the simplest projects has grown tremendously over the last two decades, and it's still increasing. You no longer start with an HTML file where you just start typing, but you bootstrap an empty project with dozens of dependencies on other software, platforms, and infrastructure elements. It makes software more scalable, reusable, and ultimately easier to work with, but such complexity comes at a cost. Especially since things have become complicated on every single layer of a software developer's responsibility: codebase (with libraries and frameworks), managed services, cloud infrastructure, and more. ⭐️ It's hard to be responsible for areas outside of your control. With such an overhead of things that your software is dependent on, it's reasonable to consider it somewhat unpredictable. ⭐️ There's no such thing as "it's just a button". While some features might appear easy to build for a non-technical role, the effort needed to resolve all hidden complexity behind it might be more than initially expected. ⭐️ Clients sometimes make the mistake of assuming that requirements passed to the dev team are precise enough for everyone to understand them. Two sentences might not be sufficient input for providing an accurate estimate. ⭐️ Software is not the only reason for unknowns. It's not easy to give an estimate when adjusting a feature built by someone else, working on a functionality without domain expertise, or just not having enough experience to deliver a particular task. What would you add to that list? . . . #developers #software #softwaredevelopment #business

How to find a good developer? 1. SOFTWARE HOUSE A software house is a cooperation model where a company provides consumer-based software upon request by its client. In essence, the company is all about attending to the software needs of its clients – usually another company. Advantages of Software House Cooperation Model: - The software house model has some distinct advantages that may make it the ideal cooperation model for software development. - Uniqueness is at the heart of software houses' provision of agile project solutions. - Software houses provide expertise to corresponding industry demands. They project their knowledge and experiences onto tasks for quality services. - Software houses typically use the agile scrum approach to improve and monitor workflow problems arising during the project. - Software houses allow cooperation with a fixed budget. The client can control project implementation and monitor costs with verifiable invoices. - This model eliminates recruitment processes, skill verification, training of employees and everything in between. - Many of the developers in these houses continue to offer post-implementation support even after the project has been completed. - Companies often have great developers with tech stacks to offer clients various options. Disadvantages of Software House: - There is always the risk of a hidden cost with a software house, which may sharply increase the budget. - Intellectual property issues may arise as to the ownership of the invention in the course of software development. - A client may find it difficult to switch software houses, especially where extensive work has been done without required tracking. - Quality control with software houses may be challenging if the client does not contract the software house after due diligence. - Sometimes, companies end up with a profit-oriented rather than a project-oriented software house. - Other issues arising from cultural and communications diversity differences may stall the project unless handled effectively. How to get the Developer you want from a Software House: - The first thing to consider is the software house history. A glance at its portfolio will reveal previous projects and products for understanding the software house's previous projects. - It is best to opt for a software house within a close geographic area to align time zones and cultural similarities. - A software house is only as good as its technology stack. So, the best choice would be to opt for one that can demonstrate it has utilized modern technology on cutting-edge projects. - Always contact the software house yourself; meet the team, explain your project's expectations and ensure they feel confident they can deliver, before you decide to . - You may engage in a candidate screening process to determine the efficiency of the developers. #EasternEuropeDevelopers #TechInCEE #DigitalTransformation #DevelopersContracting

New Post: A guide to requirements management software - https://lnkd.in/dnrpyjqA - When developing projects, stakeholder expectations are very hard to manage. Aligning expectations with project goals is critical for success as a product manager. The good news is that when you run requirements gathering correctly, the process becomes much smoother. In the requirements gathering phase, teams need to keep track of user needs, and expectations. Requirements management software can become a powerful tool to capture, analyze, and meet these expectations throughout the project lifecycle. Let’s dive deep into the nuances of RM software and how teams can make the best use of them to streamline the process. What is requirements management software? A requirements management software is a tool designed to facilitate the process of handling project requirements from gathering ideas to project completion. Think of it as a central point for collecting, documenting, analyzing, and tracking stakeholder expectations. It provides a structure to the process from the very beginning and ensures that every project element is aligned with defined objectives. This minimizes the communication gap and scope creep, enhancing overall efficiency. It helps with: Capturing requirements from various stakeholders Documenting, organizing, and recording requirements for easy access Analyzing the requirements for feasibility and impact Tracking changes to requirements throughout the project Key features of requirements management software A requirements management software has a range of features designed to address the complex nature of a project lifecycle by addressing the challenges of each aspect: Document collaboration This feature facilitates a workspace where team members can work on documents in a collective manner. It helps to gather feedback from all stakeholders making sure all ideas are taken into consideration. These tools can include version control and change tracking, acting as a single source of truth for all teams involved. Baseline management Baseline management provides an overview of project requirements and their evolution during the entire lifecycle. It acts as a reference point to gauge progress and manage changes. Project teams can reference specific versions of requirement documents when discussing project milestones. Traceability Traceability in RM software is essential for systematic linkage between a requirement and its deliverable. This can include, design documents, test cases, and plans of deployment. Such transparent connectivity promotes a sense of accountability, ensuring the final delivery tackles every set objective. Impact analysis Gauging impact at any given stage of a project lifecycle is a challenge. Impact analysis tools help teams evaluate the consequences of each change. It also helps to understand how a change in one area of a project affects a different area. This applies to project scope, budget, timelines, and
