We specialize in the educational model of Physical Therapy. Unlike the medical model, our focus is on ensuring students can fully access their school environment. 🏫 Here's how we accomplish this: 📝 Assessment: We evaluate a student's ability to access and navigate their school environment. This includes things like mobility, posture, and how it impacts their learning. Our focus is on their education within the school environment— not on their specific medical conditions. As physical therapists in a clinic, we can almost always find something for an individual to improve. As school-based physical therapists, we use our school-based lens to assess functional and safe access within the school environment. 🎓 🎯 Individual Plans: We create personalized goals to improve a student's functional abilities in the classroom, on the playground, and throughout the day, helping them participate and grow as a student. 🛝 🤝 Teamwork: We collaborate with teachers and staff to align our strategies with the classroom and school, making adjustments when needed. 📚 📖 Education: We educate students, teachers, and parents on ways to support learning in an inclusive environment. 🧑🏫 📈 Progress: We continuously track progress and adapt our approach to help students become more independent throughout their school day. 🏃♂️ Our goal is to break down barriers and ensure every student can succeed, regardless of physical abilities. It's all about creating an inclusive learning experience! 🌟 #SchoolPT #PTinSchools #SchoolBasedTherapy #PediatricTherapy #SchoolHealth

Who could forget March 2020? Overnight, children transitioned from classrooms to makeshift desks at home, laptops replacing the #sensory experiences of school. Some adapted well, but for others, especially those just beginning their academic journey, this disruption was a real challenge. My then first grader loved selecting books, feeling each page, and listening to her teacher’s voice as they read together. Suddenly, that experience was replaced by a screen, where reading became a task she avoided. I tried everything to keep her engaged, but her resistance grew. So, what’s a mother to do? I leaned into what I knew best—#movement. Assessing #motor #control and #coordination were skills I’d honed as a clinician. But my experience was mostly orthopedic, not #developmental. So, I reached out to her godmother, a pediatric therapist. Despite all our efforts to make it #playful, she sensed the therapeutic intent, and #resistance returned. I realized I needed to stick to one role. I sought a pediatric rehab center for reassurance that no “organic” issue was behind her #avoidance. Here’s where things got interesting: In my densely populated area, only two facilities offered pediatric rehab. One had a year-long wait; the other had an eight-month wait, cash-only. This wasn’t just a personal issue; it pointed to a #systemic #gap many families likely face. So, I “hit the books.” My top strength is #Input, and I dove into research, exploring movement. I realized movement isn’t just physical; it’s healing. It’s life. This understanding broadened my view on the role of movement-based therapy, especially for kids navigating screen-centered learning. This experience underscored the importance of movement #freedom in children. Many today face #restrictions, spending hours in devices that limit their movement and exploration. In a world where #containment is the norm, I reflect on a broader issue: the normalization of “container babies.” Addressing this trend is essential if we want to nurture a generation that is not only physically capable but fully #engaged with the world around them.
