MO-NO-PO(WDER)-LY ⛷ How much #skiing do you get for your buck? Fairly little in many US resorts. I timed myself - the dollar went fast. At Beaver Creek you pay 315 USD at rack rate for a day of skiing. Assuming you take the first and the last lift and take only a 30 min break, that gives you 40 seconds of actual net fun on the piste per dollar (truly net, not counting lift time). This is bad value compared with many European resorts, where your dollar stretches to between 2.5 and 3 minutes on the slopes. Why is that? Many reasons. A big one: market concentration. Two large groups have been buying up resorts in the US over the last few years, reducing consumer options and competition. No surprise: prices went up far more than inflation did. I am a big fan of liberal market economies, you might want to call it capitalism. But #capitalism only works with proper #regulation. Monopoly is a fun game but a terrible market outcome.
