🏥 One of the most crucial issues for healthcare networks is the management of hardware resources and storage space. 💬 This issue has become even more promoted in the medical imaging departments and PACS servers, especially today, with the introduction of multi-slice devices as well as advanced mammography and sonography machines that are film-based and are occupying a significant amount of storage space for files. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗦 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀? During PACS implementations, I have observed that slow image retrieval often results from network latency or server congestion. Here is a glimpse of what you can do to address this issue: 𝟭. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱: Ensure sufficient bandwidth and low latency, especially for large images. 𝟮. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Store frequently accessed images closer to the user. 𝟯. 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗦 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Separate high-use from low-use images for efficient retrieval. For example, to check the network speed, you can perform the following tests: • 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁: Use the ping command, on CMD, to check latency (round-trip time) to the PACS server: >> 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 <𝘗𝘈𝘊𝘚_𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘳_𝘐𝘗> Look for average latency. Higher than 100ms could indicate network delays. • 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲: To find where the network bottleneck is occurring: >> 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘦 <𝘗𝘈𝘊𝘚_𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘳_𝘐𝘗> # 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘹 >> 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵 <𝘗𝘈𝘊𝘚_𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘳_𝘐𝘗> # 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘴 This will show each hop and how much time each step takes. Any delays along the route could point to network issues. • 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗱𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗶𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳: A tool to measure network bandwidth between two hosts. Install iPerf on two machines (one as server, one as client). On the server: >> 𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧 -𝘴 On the client (connected to the same network): >> 𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧 -𝘤 <𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘳_𝘐𝘗> This will give you the bandwidth between the two systems, identifying if your network can handle large DICOM file transfers. #PACS #Radiology #MedicalImaging #Healthcare
