Some lawyers I speak to would only ever consider doing a secondment as a last resort if they couldn't find a permanent role. For others, it's a very deliberate career choice. Here are just a few reasons why a secondment might be the right move for you. 1. Breaking into a new area or industry Companies have different considerations when hiring secondees and permanent staff. Whilst experience requirements may rule you out of contention for a permanent role, companies bringing in secondees are usually looking to bring someone in as soon as possible and will often be more flexible when it comes to previous experience. If you want to get into a new area, a secondment may be the best way to break in. 2. Seeing what's out there You might be interested in lots of different industry sectors and types of work. Secondments are great for variety and seeing what good looks like in different organisations. That experience can be extremely valuable wherever you end up. 3. Flexibility Secondments are great for flexibility. Whether you need it for family commitments or pursuing other passions, finding a working arrangement that fits in with your life is a key reason why people look at secondment work. 4. Permanent opportunities Finding great lawyers is hard. Really f*cking hard. Finding great lawyers that are the right cultural fit for an organisation is even harder. So when a company finds a lawyer they like and who knows how a company operates, they move heaven and earth to keep them. Plenty of secondments turn into permanent roles, including General Counsel positions. Of course, running a secondments business, I would say all of that, wouldn't I? But a lot of people rule out secondments without understanding the benefits of that way of working. If you're interested in joining the St. Leger Brockman secondments team, send your CV to secondments@stlegerbrockman.com. We provide flexible resourcing solutions to a wide range of high profile businesses, from international airports to listed medical device manufacturers. The one thing all our clients have in common? Great people. No d*ckheads is a non-negotiable. #lawyers #inhousecounsel #secondments

I don’t think there’d be too many people in GC/ head of legal roles who haven’t thought at some point ‘there needs to be two of me to get through all of this’. This thought might be sporadic, or it might be a weekly, or even daily, occurrence. You may well have great people in your team, but they’re often lawyers that are climbing the career ladder and don’t have the requisite experience to fill your shoes just yet. I’m working with a number of lawyers at the moment who have operated at the very highest level, have achieved everything they set out to do in their legal careers, and are now looking to the next phase of their working life. For some, this involves taking on some board roles, others are looking to do more voluntary work, and nearly all will take a few more overseas trips than they have in recent decades, but they all want to continue to do legal work in some capacity. Most of the people I speak with want to get back into doing the work that they had to let go of as they progressed through their careers, when reporting and personnel management began to take up more and more of their time. So if you’re feeling like you need to be in two places at once at the moment, and need the support of someone who has been where you are before, I’m working with senior lawyers in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth who are ready to go. Financial services, energy and resources, FMCG, defence, technology, telcos, etc., etc., etc. Whatever your industry, I’m confident we’ll have a shadow GC to suit. #inhousecounsel #seniorlawyers #generalcounsel

Before we undertake searches at Marsden, our private practice team spends a lot of time researching and analysing the talent pools in all of the major global legal centres. When we look top tier transactional lawyers who commenced their legal careers in 2019 or earlier, there are very few with just one firm on their CV. What does that tell us? 1. The people who haven't yet changed firm at this level have something pretty good going on with their current firm. They are not likely to move unless they have a reason to – such as progression being blocked, or a similar ‘push factor’. 2. Firms targeting first-time movers need to approach them in a targeted, bespoke way, and with a very appealing and well thought through proposition. 3. Law firms and hiring partners need to be much more open to recruiting lawyers who have moved firms before. As global markets heat up and the demand for top-tier transactional lawyers increases, talent pools will shrink. Excluding lawyers from interview shortlists on the basis that they have moved firms could prove counter-productive. 4. Nowadays it is more usual that younger lawyers don't subscribe to the ‘𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙢 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚’ mantra. In line with other industries, legal careers will be more fluid in the future. If you would like to talk to us about a search for your team, please contact me at sally.gardner or contact one of my colleagues: 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻: Sally Gardner or Alex Russell 𝗗𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻 Sally Gardner 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮: Jonathan Walmsley 𝗨𝗦𝗔: David Nicol 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Steve Salem 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁: Sonia Patel #lawfirms #hiring #legalcareers #legalrecruitment #marsden
