Ever wondered why modern skyscrapers sway minimally and imperceptibly to occupants? Structural engineers use a combination of innovative materials and clever design techniques to ensure buildings remain stable and secure. For instance, they incorporate tuned mass dampers—large, strategically placed weights that counteract the motion of the building caused by wind and earthquakes. These engineering marvels are hidden within the structure but play a crucial role in maintaining the comfort and safety of occupants. At BERM, we're proud to leverage such cutting-edge technology to create buildings that stand tall and strong, no matter what nature throws at them. #StructuralEngineering #Skyscrapers #InnovativeDesign #EngineeringMarvels #BuildingSafety #ConstructionInnovation #ModernArchitecture #WindEngineering #EarthquakeEngineering #BuildingTechnology #EngineeringExcellence #SmartBuildings

What does "𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆" mean? It’s about creating buildings that last longer by being easier to maintain, reducing the need for resource-intensive repairs and renovations. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Maintenance is often overlooked in the design process, leading to higher costs and disruptions down the line. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Traditional maintenance relies on visual inspections, which can easily miss hidden problems. By integrating a conductive underlay into the roofing system, we allow for regular and accurate Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) inspections. It becomes easy to identify and repair small issues early, before they turn into costly leaks. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲: An easily maintainable roofing system, less prone to failure, and cost-effective over its lifespan. Designing for maintainability isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for sustainable architecture. It ensures our buildings are not just beautiful but also durable and efficient. 👉 Follow for more insights on ELD, roofing technology, and maintenance tips! #electricleakdetection #construction #architecture #design #maintenance #waterproofing

A truly fascinating and extraordinary article that challenges the concept of building net zero into the next generation of sustainable buildings.
Construction Defect Claims, Coastal Design, Disruption & Delay Claims, Historic Preservation, Protective Design, Sustainable Design
This is a very interesting topic and one I think has great potential. It is very challenging because it requires solutions from many different engineering disciplines, structural, mechanical, electrical, smart controls, and of course architecture! I recall fondly the work I did with the team at Columbia on Building Integrated Solar, but also recall it as very challenging. I know there are many talented teams out there that have the right mix to bring us some exciting innovation in building facades, we see it daily here on LinkedIn and it makes me happy. Most of the teams will be pursuing complex systems like the one we designed for our DOE grants, but I would like to pause and reflect on some traditional solutions like shade trees and/or ivy, which are naturally smart. My only complaint about my house in Oregon is that my pine trees are kind dumb;) Green Walls don't need to be fancy, they just need a bit of design to make sure the ivy doesn't damage the facade, and a little gardening. Anyone have a facade gardening drone yet? #GreenWalls #SmartFacades #SustainableDesign
