Energy and carbon prices rose across the board on Monday, except for the Asian JKM LNG marker, which remained flat at USD 13.48/MMBtu. The steepest rise was in natural gas in the US, where voters go to the polls today for what many commentators agree will be the most consequential election of recent decades – not least for energy and climate policy and the role of the US in geopolitics. #Pricewatch #GasMattersToday

Former President Trump's unilateral approach to energy policy, marked by prioritizing U.S. energy independence and deregulation, may exacerbate global geopolitical tensions, particularly with Russia and OPEC. By unilaterally expanding U.S. oil and gas production, Trump clashed with key energy powers, complicating efforts to stabilize global oil markets. Russia and OPEC, which play pivotal roles in managing oil supply and prices, could challenge U.S. dominance, increasing risks of economic volatility and political discord. This approach could also weaken long-term cooperation on energy transition goals. As energy becomes more entangled with global politics, these tensions may escalate.
