Understanding the Human Impact of Macular Disease The latest survey conducted by Macular Disease Foundation Australia in 2023 sheds light on the experiences of nearly 2,000 individuals living with macular disease. This comprehensive survey delves into mental health, barriers to persisting with anti-VEGF injections, and low vision aids and technology. Key learnings included: · Mental wellbeing challenges affect over 15% of respondents, with one in five requiring support · 3% of people with neovascular AMD forego recommended eye injections · 10% cite cost as a barrier to treatment, and · Despite 70% recognising the value of low vision aids, accessibility remains a hurdle. Macular Disease Foundation Australia has launched Eye Connect – a support service for people living with AMD, which helps address these key learnings. Consider referring your AMD patients to this valuable service. Read more on MDFA’s website. https://lnkd.in/g6KQupAX Macular Disease Foundation Australia Kathy Chapman #EyeConnect #MDFA #AMD

The Loneliness Epidemic and the Core Value of Membership. Associations play an essential role bringing people together. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that loneliness could soon become a global epidemic, which could lead to increased rates of dementia, heart disease, stroke and premature death. In this post to the Member365 site, I encourage Associations to highlight the work they do in creating communities, and helping individuals recognize what they have in common with others, while improving mental, and physical, health outcomes. #member365 #loneliness #lonelinessepidemic #associations

This week I was reading about the rates of chronic health disease burden in the USA and globally. The numbers and costs continue to be startling. "Ninety percent of the nation's $4.5 trillion in annual health care expenditures are for people with chronic and mental health conditions. Interventions to prevent and manage these diseases can have significant health and economic benefits." Source- https://lnkd.in/eMBvfnZy. The global burden is even higher - "The estimated cost of chronic disease is expected to reach $47 trillion worldwide by 2030. Individual lifestyle and behaviors and community factors play important roles in the development and management of chronic diseases." Source- https://lnkd.in/eHanVZFp ✨ As a public health care practitioner, I continue to promote prevention for our communities. I encourage each of us to get our preventative health care screenings including dental, eye, and any other care you are seeking. Take good care!!! ✨✨✨ #preventativehealth #publichealth #communityhealth #globalhealth

A reminder as we wrap up Social Wellness Month, "Patients diagnosed with GERD should be screened for depression and anxiety."¹ It's no secret that GERD can negatively impact a patient's social life. The troublesome symptoms can keep patients home from celebrations, especially events that include food, like a family pizza party. Appropriate treatment of GERD combined with screening for depression and anxiety may be a more holistic approach that can get patients back to being themselves and interacting with the people they love.
