Platcorp's Impact on African Agriculture & Smallholder Farmers Agriculture is vital to Africa, providing livelihoods for over 70% of the population. However, the sector faces significant challenges such as climate change, lack of access to markets, and limited access to financial services. In 2023, Platcorp committed $9.37 million USD in agricultural loans, benefiting 19,788 smallholder farmers and value chain actors. These funds empowered farmers to improve their farming practices, increase yields, access markets and improve inputs. Through the Viazi (Potato) and Maziwa (Dairy) Project in Keringet, Kenya, supported by Swedfund International and the Bamboo Capital Partners,113 farmers received financial and technical assistance. The initiative, focused on improving dairy and potato production, helped farmers adopt clean seed practices, optimize fertilizer use, and increase yields through pest management. 83% of the farmers reported higher yields, with 94% relying on farming as their primary source of income. Over the last three years Mondi’s Zimele programme in South Africa has developed 122 emerging farmers. This includes 17 Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) constituted by 11 co-operatives, and six individual farmers. More than 1,098 households have benefitted, with some 320 permanent and seasonal jobs created, and approximately R2-million in revenue has been generated since the programme’s launch. Emerging Zululand farmers who want to join the Mondi programme can send their proposals, with pictures of their current operations, to their local traditional authority, which sits on the Mondi Liaising Forum. After a comprehensive assessment, the chiefs submit them to Mondi’s Land Department to determine if they are at the subsistence or semi-commercial phase. If all criteria are met, Mondi Zimele will get on board and support them accordingly. According to General Manager Nelly Ndlovu Mondi Zimele is the business development arm of Mondi South Africa. Its Agriculture SMME programme is part of a broader initiative that provides technical and business support to emerging farmers. In 2024, SAO Agro continued to champion the transformation of Nigeria’s agriculture value chain through sustainable practices and innovative farming solutions. With an expanded team working on our plantations monthly, we have reinforced our commitment to increasing our investment in food production, installing processing facilities for external clients, and consulting with national policymakers on best practices to curb food insecurity. This year, we achieved significant milestones in scaling up mechanised farming initiatives. A highlight was the continuous expansion of our oil palm estate, with the transplantation of over 100,000 more seedlings and 120,000 more in the nursery. These efforts have significantly boosted oil palm productivity projections, creating new revenue streams and job opportunities in our host communities. As we look ahead to 2025, SAO Agro is poised to scale its impact further. Preparations are underway for the next planting season, with plans to clear thousands more hectares of land at our oil palm plantation and thousands more hectares for fruit and cassava production. With these ambitious plans, SAO Agro remains dedicated to transforming agriculture through innovative, sustainable, and inclusive practices, ensuring a brighter future for Nigeria’s farming communities.

A conference in Nairobi, Kenya, gathered over 400 delegates and organizations to explore how #digital solutions can transform #African farming. Companies like DigiCow Africa Ltd are offering tools for farmers, including digital recordkeeping, access to financing, and market connections, which improve productivity and livelihoods. Mercy Corps AgriFin, operating in 40 African countries, focuses on education, agronomic advice, and precision tools to help farmers make informed decisions. Despite advances, experts note that more funding is necessary to fully meet the sector's needs. Research shows that Africa can double or triple its grain and cereal output, boosting global production by 20%. Similar growth potential also exists for horticulture crops and livestock production. But where will this growth come from? Despite a rise in medium-sized farms, increased productivity from smallholder farmers will be the main driver of agricultural growth. Large-scale farms, common elsewhere, aren't taking hold uniformly across Africa. Many countries still have few large farms, and even existing ones struggle to access resources and expertise.
