This weekend, I attended an event featuring two exceptional leaders: the former CEO of the Bank of Singapore Bahren Shaari(博林) and the Singapore CEO of SingPost Shahrin Abdol Salam, PBM. It was a rare opportunity to sit in a close setting, ask direct questions, and absorb wisdom from their decades of experience.
Their journeys were not just inspiring—they were deeply insightful. Here are a few lessons that resonated with me:
🔹 Resilience and Perseverance
Challenges are inevitable, but their stories showed how facing setbacks with determination and grit is key to long-term success. Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about moving forward with clarity and purpose.
🔹 Hard Work and Focus
Both leaders shared how results come from consistent effort and being strategic about where to invest energy. Hard work is important, but so is working on the right things.
🔹 Delegation as Leadership
One of the most profound insights was how leadership isn’t about doing everything—it’s about enabling others to succeed. Empowering teams and trusting them to deliver is an art that amplifies impact.
🔹 Lifelong Learning
Their commitment to reading and staying curious stood out. Leadership isn’t a destination; it’s a journey of constant learning, adapting, and growing.
🔹 V.I.B.E.S. Framework
Inspired by It’s Not a Glass Ceiling, It’s a Sticky Floor, the concept of Visibility, Implicit Bias, Expectations, Skills, and Sticky Floors came up in the discussion. It reminded me of how critical it is to stay visible, challenge biases, and continuously refine your skills to navigate the professional world effectively.
I’m grateful to Amalina Abdul Nasir for organizing such a meaningful event. The intimate setting allowed us to connect with the speakers on a personal level. Thank you, Ella Badis, for being a brilliant moderator and drawing out the best insights with your thoughtful questions. MENDAKI Club Mara Mentoring by Mendaki Club
