On March 13, 1990, 60 demonstrators left their wheelchairs and crawled up the steps of the US Capitol, demanding the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA was passed 4 months later on July 26, 1990, prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities in public life, including bus stops. From January to March 2023, bus ridership increased by 21% compared to the same period in 2022. APTA reported that overall ridership reached over 70% of pre-pandemic levels by September 2022. With a more diverse population using public transportation, it's essential to ensure quality and accessibility for all. The ADA protects riders with disabilities, ensuring equal access starting at ADA-compliant bus stops. Local governments must remove physical barriers and update policies to meet these standards. Universal best practices can help cities and transit agencies exceed these requirements for better accessibility. Hey, all. Accessibility is about more than wheelchair ramps and accessible websites. It’s also about basic rights like voting. It turns out that, in the US anyway, polling places are not always accessible. https://lnkd.in/g5KN49XZ #accessibility #A11yGoodReads

Did you know today is #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay (#GAAD)? As Peter Slatin reflects in our May issue of Able News, "The fight to unleash digital accessibility embodied by GAAD and its celebration of all things being digitally accessible is a primary building block of global disability inclusion." Read Peter's article on page 14: https://lnkd.in/eiYb5AXv (Image description: Above quote from Peter is surrounded by an ombre blue and yellow border. At the top is the logo for Able News at The Viscardi Center, with a blue and white icon of a wheelchair user reaching for a star. At the bottom is the GAAD logo, blue letters surrounded by a circle with a small graphic of a keyboard underneath.)

This week, the Council of the European Union adopted proposals to enhance rights for millions of people with disabilities across the EU. Here’s how they will make a difference: 🆔The European Disability Card: a recognized proof of disability throughout the EU, ensuring cardholders access to essential services in all 27 EU countries, from transport to cultural events. 🅿️ The Enhanced European Parking Card: this will guarantee uniform parking rights across EU countries, providing greater independence for individuals with disabilities. https://eu.smh.re/0WAQ

On my way to Indigo at the o2 for the State of London Debate 2024. If I'm lucky enough to get to ask or submit a question, these are three I'd like answers to. 1) What specific changes and I emphasise specific, if any, without omitting anything, do you intend to make regarding disability benefits and reforming these? 2) Will you commit to Legislating to fully incorporate the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) into UK law.? 3) Do you subscribe to all of the asks in the Disabled People's Manifesto 2024?

The challenges faced by people with disabilities in accessing public transport and infrastructure are a reminder that disability is not just a matter of physical impairments but of societal barriers—this is at the core of the social model of disability. The inaccessibility of public spaces and services is due to the environment's failure to accommodate diversity. We must shift our focus from seeing disability as a problem that resides within the person to understanding that it is a problem created by an unaccommodating society. The real issue is the design of our public transport systems, buildings, and urban spaces, which exclude a significant portion of our population. When we talk about inclusivity, it’s not just a box to tick—it’s about reshaping our world so that everyone, regardless of ability, can participate fully in life. #InclusionForAllInAll #SocialModelOfDisability

It's evident that whenever Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) are designed, persons with disabilities are not considered. This is not just an inconvenience—it's a violation of their rights. Article 54(1)(c) of the Constitution of Kenya guarantees reasonable access to all places, public transport, and information for persons with disabilities. My Persons With Disabilities Bill pushes for a complete redesign of public transport to ensure it accommodates everyone. Just as everyone needs to move freely, we also need to move freely and comfortably.

Accessible transport is not just about creating opportunities for those with disabilities; it's about building a world where everyone has the freedom to move and thrive. At Ace Mobility, we are dedicated to making this vision a reality by providing innovative and inclusive transport solutions that cater to individuals with reduced mobility, ensuring they have equal access to the journey of life. Aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 10—Reducing Inequalities—we strive to ensure equitable access to transport for all, fostering a more inclusive society. However, we are not yet where we want to be. We look forward to supporting you in pushing for a complete redesign of public transport to ensure it accommodates everyone.
