It's Canadian wildfire season again. There is one myth that needs to be busted though. It's often said that a very high proportion are due to arson, but according to the Alberta Government this is not true. The largest cause of wildfire is lightning strikes. This accounts for 80% of the 2023 burned area. The Government says 91 (out of 1,088) fires were caused by arson burning just 262 hectares (0.01% of the burned area). There are other human causes including power line strikes, BBQs, agricultural and residential fires. These tend to burn less area as they are normally close to fire services. The fires are already causing air pollution issues in the US. 🧟♀️ Did you ever think that zombies would be a threat to air quality? Okay, we’re not talking about the creatures from The Walking Dead, but undead flames smoldering in frigid temperatures under the snow of Canadian winters. Yes, zombie fires! As we mark the beginning of Air Quality Awareness Week, let’s take a closer look at this strange phenomenon. These stubborn, flameless burns fester in the peat moss soil, insulated by snow. Not a new occurrence, British Columbia typically sees five or six of these per year, but as of January this year there were 106 zombie fires smoking away in the province threatening to reignite in warmer weather. 🔥 According to the BBC, Canada lost over 44 million acres in 2023 to wildfires, effecting air quality across North America. Come to think of it, the images of cities affected by last year’s Canadian wildfire smoke did look a bit apocalyptic. While you may not be able to prepare your buildings for the zombie apocalypse, you can prepare better for wildfire season. See how GPS Air solutions can help you protect your indoor air from outdoor pollutants, like wildfire smoke. https://bit.ly/3Qzt4P4 #AQAW2024 #AirQuality #Wildfires #IndoorAir #IAQ https://lnkd.in/evwAVJSq

As we fiddle “Rome” burns… Every decision we take, from what we buy, how we consume, the politicians we elect, is now existential. Canada will see some of the worst effects of climate change. From storm devastation on our coasts to killer wildfires across our great land. Environment Canada has said our air quality index has dropped significantly since wildfires have accelerated and it’s going to continue to get worse across our entire country. Will it take us all literally choking in the streets to finally take #climatechange seriously, or will we just accept that we will die sooner, be more miserable and get on with our day? Wildfire smoke often contains a complex mixture of carbon dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes and other particulate matter that we don’t want to inhale. I have an effective solution that can help mitigate some of these problems in your outdoor air. By keeping them from entering your building we make your indoor air cleaner to breathe. #hvac #hvacdesign #buildingperformance #hvacsystems #IndoorAirQuality #FacilityManagement #energy #HVACcontrols #hvacmaintenance #EfficientComfort #HVACExpertise #commercialhvac #airconditioning #energysolutions #energyefficiency #heatingandcooling #BuildingOperations #HVACequipment #HVACdesign

As a Canadian that grew up in the foothills of the Rockies, one of the memories that’s etched in my mind is the smell of fresh pine trees. Even now, I can close my eyes and smell it in my mind. Sadly the fresh pine smell is now being replaced with smoke that is impacting health and affecting air quality including in several U.S. states. As wildfires ravage western Canada, thousands are fleeing their homes. The situation remains volatile, with over 130 fires burning, and many out of control. In Alberta (my home province), a State of Local Emergency has been declared, highlighting the severity of the situation. These wildfires are not isolated incidents but part of a larger trend. Climate change is fueling more frequent and severe wildfires, a reality we must address urgently. My thoughts are with those affected by these devastating fires and the many other climate related disasters including the severe flooding in Brazil. #CanadaWildfires #ClimateAction #Climateishealth https://lnkd.in/eY95b_RC

Useful to know - thanks. There’s also the fact that once a forest has burned down it takes a good while until it regenerates enough to burn down again. (In my local area it seems to be about every 10 years). So when people say they’ve ‘not been worse than last year’ that is one reason why.
