I've recently been reading Kestral Gaian's "Twenty Eight: Stories from the section 28 generation". It is a series of both empowering and harrowing accounts of LGBTQIA+ writers on their experiences of living under Section 28 within UK education (1988 to 2003). The "Don't say gay" law, which made it a criminal offence for teachers to educate my generation on LGBTQ+ existence (let alone rights/needs/support/humanity) continues to have a lasting dynasty of horror, discrimination, and stigmatisation for millions of people today. I often think about Section 28, a policy that actively suppressed LGBTQ+ education, creating a culture of fear, ignorance, and bigotry. It’s a stark reminder of what happens when education is stifled: prejudice takes root, and vulnerable/minority communities suffer. Now, given evidence suggests that neurodivergent people are more likely to be/identify as LGBTQ+, with some papers suggesting autistic people are eight times more likely to identify as LGBTQ+. It is vital that we not only consider the education of neurodivergence, but the intersection of Neurodivergence, sexuality, and gender from a position which acknowledges the sociocultural landscape of my generations entire educational journey. How did our autistic/ADHD friends, family, and colleagues make sense of a schooling system which denied their LGBTQ+ identity as well as their neurodivergent one? One of my proudest accomplishments to date was getting funding to have the incredible PhD student Jo McCormick work with me on their doctorate exploring the lived experience of LGBTQ+ parents of neurodivergent children this October. I suspect that the lasting after-effects of section 28 will be echoed throughout the findings both explicitly, and implicitly.

My first last-author paper! Given the lack of data on sexual orientation and gender identity in graduate student populations, I set out to see what literature exists around the experiences of LGBTQ+ doctoral students. The results have now been published: https://lnkd.in/eTsrKr5w

📣 We're proud to announce the launch of ‘Understanding Diversity in Gender and Sexuality’, a workshop program that builds understanding, and teaches skills to help navigate these topics with empathy and respect. Young people have consistently told us that they’d like to know more about diverse genders and sexualities. We regularly receive questions from people who want to understand more about their own identities, and those of their family and friends. Young people recognise complex social and cultural issues, and want to learn more about them. Why Understanding Diversity in Gender and Sexuality? 💙 Foster an Inclusive School Culture: Our program addresses the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students, helping to create a safer, more welcoming environment that improves the wellbeing and academic success of all students. 💙 Interactive Learning: Engaging activities tailored for each session and school, which encourage reflection, critical analysis, and discussion. 💙 Expert-Driven: Developed with the University of Sydney, this program blends research and youth perspectives. 🌈 Email us at programs@consentlabs.org.au to find out more about our new program, 'Understanding Diversity in Gender and Sexuality', being offered to eligible NSW schools for FREE for a limited time only. #consentlabs #inclusiveeducation #allkindsofunderstanding #allkindsofsupport #allkindsofcare NSW Department of Communities and Justice Arts and Social Sciences - University of Sydney

🏳️🌈 According to a 2023 survey from the C.D.C., roughly 3.3 percent of high school students identify as transgender and another 2.2 percent are questioning their gender identity. Unfortunately, they also found that these students experience higher rates of bullying, sadness, and suicidality. Here at LYRIC, we believe that school should be a safe place for all young people-- regardless of their sexuality or gender identity. LYRIC is proud to offer Q-Groups in 30 middle and high schools across SFUSD. Q-Groups are a community space for LGBTQIA+ students to explore their identity, learn queer history, and exist without expectation. Having programs in place like Q-Groups can be a life-saving tool when it comes to protecting trans/gender non-conforming youth. Excited to share the new report we have been working on at Pew Research Center: In the midst of national debates on what schools should be teaching, we asked public K-12 teachers, teens and the public how they see topics related to race and LGBTQ issues playing out in the classroom. Some key takeaways here: 👉 When it comes to the national debates about what schools should be teaching, a sizeable share of teachers (41%) say these debates have had a negative impact on their ability to do their job. 👉 Most (71%) of teachers say teachers themselves don’t have enough influence over what’s taught in public schools in their area. But a majority (58%) say their state government has too much influence. 👉 Most teachers (64%) say students should learn that the legacy of slavery still affects Black Americans today, while half say students should not learn about gender identity in school. If you're not asking the question, you're not getting the data. And if you're not getting the data, you are leaving whole populations unseen and chronically under-resourced. Particularly in this time of increasing hostility toward LGBTQ youth--and trans youth in particular--I'm glad to see efforts pushing nationalized data collection for this community. #education #K12 #data #LGBTQ #equity #access #studentsupport
