The Federal Government is conducting an inquiry into the parlous state of the Australian music industry. The Yuin Folk Club, the producer of the Cobargo Folk Festival, has made a submission which can be found below (Sub Number 17). Parliamentary inquiries can be a bit hit or miss but we figure that it's worth presenting a regional community perspective. We hope that this inquiry might come out with some positive recommendations for supporting not-for-profit, community based festivals, rather than throwing more money at big international companies, driven mainly by the profit motive. We're also hoping for more direct, practical support and funding for independent Australian musicians. https://lnkd.in/djnVaCbH

Touching Perfection: A Tribute to Tribute Bands I love tribute bands. I mean, note-for-note, perfect tribute bands. I could watch them all day. I say it’s about time someone salute their efforts. The problem is that most tribute bands get a bad rap. And for good reason . . . There are a ton of terrible tribute bands out there. But, hey, I’ll give them an “A” for putting in the effort. But those perfect, note-for-note tribute bands? I love them. And I love tribute bands, but not for the reason you think. No, I don’t need to hear another band play “A Hard Day’s Night.” I have The Beatles for that, thank you. It’s not about liking tribute bands for their sound. It’s about imagining the endless hours those musicians practice to perfect their sound. It’s about perfecting their craft. It’s about achieving perfection. And what better way to perfect your craft than by copying the masters? Hey, Michelangelo did it, right? And Picasso? Yup. Heck, let’s add Andy Warhol, too. Oops—I almost forgot . . . The Beatles copied Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and the Everly Brothers. Me? Did I copy the masters? You bet I did. During the first few weeks studying copywriting under Sean D’Souza . . . I copied Kindle’s copy. I copied Apple’s bullet points. I copied from other master copywriters. By hand—not typing. What is the goal of copying the masters? To touch perfection. I think we’re all trying to touch perfection, right? The question for new writers is simple . . . Do you have this level of discipline? PS: This Chicago tribute band has touched perfection. Thank boss, it's Friday: Time to mix music and work! 🧛 THE VAMPIRE HACK 🧛 🎶MUSIC: “Too old for dyin’ young, too young to live alone.” Capricorn is not your typical catchy single. The song combines bittersweet mid-tempo tunes, relaxed drum fills, and harshly discordant slide guitars. It might be unsettling at first, but the piece gradually draws you in, subtly inviting you into a mesmerizing musical realm. It left me captivated and yearning for more. A few weeks later, another track was added to what has now become a three-track record. By the fourth track, I was fully immersed in the vibe, ready to take a dive into the full LP. Kudos to Columbia Records! You reintroduced me to Vampire Weekend*, a band I had nearly forgotten since the late 2000s. The strategy of gradually releasing an EP appears to be the music industry’s latest trick – DIIV, one of best bands on the planet (believe me), is following the same playbook. This could well be the very last attempt to preserve the endangered concept of the album. In the TikTok era, many is too much: Who is prepared to take in and process over 10 brand new songs at once? We’re not talking about familiar covers or a compilation of remixes here, but genuine musical compositions. 📍WORK: What about you? How much do you need to convey to your team? You have a vision: you know where you want to lead your organization. You have a strategy on how to get there. Now, you need everyone on board! But how much can your team members absorb and understand? Don't overestimate their capacity to absorb novelty. Can you begin by inviting them in? Share what you aim to achieve. Perhaps tell a story that will give flesh to what you have in mind: “In two years, this is what our organization will look like…”. Take questions and allow the vision to settle in. Then, after some time, provide more details on the strategy you’ve planned. “This is how we will gain a competitive edge...” Don’t rush. They’ll soon be ready to dive into the full plan. *The album is out today.

Despite the tremendous value and recognition Ethiopia received from this connection, there was a missed opportunity to fully capitalize on it.  This connection goes beyond music—it's about honoring the cultural heritage that Ethiopia and Rastafarians share.
