I never tire of talking about cold calling. It seems LinkedIn as a whole doesn’t either.
When we wrote the Graphic Sales Stories episode, “The Joy of Cold Calling” we tried to capture what every cold caller goes through.
Despite it all it still works and is probably the activity you’re most in control of that will yield predictable results!
Anyway, if you lead a team that cold calls or you cold call, I think you might love this episode as it's full of stories and lessons on why it’s so hard and why it’s still so worthwhile.
I also hope you’ll laugh a lot, too. Peter and I did.
(We call it a podcast but you actually kind of need to watch it as we also share the comic during the episode.)

📈 This is one of the most neglected aspects of what happens on the front lines.
Companies have to look at the engine on the front lines and ask if they are creating a mismatch in outreach that misses opportunities every day?
MANY companies are and have no clue.

🚀 From Sales Calls to Business Opportunities: Rethinking the Approach
In the world of sales, it’s time we rethink the first impression. Here’s a truth bomb from MariAnne Vanella: cold calls aren’t about making friends; they’re about creating business opportunities. The difference lies in how we approach it. Instead of a pushy sales call, why not elevate it into a meaningful business conversation?
💡 Key Takeaways:
✅ Executives aren’t oblivious—they know when you’re pitching.
✅ Shift your mindset: Make that call about solving problems, not just selling solutions.
✅ Transform "salesy" into consultative, authentic engagement for better outcomes.
As Marianne puts it, “If you take that sales call and make it a business call mentality, the outcome changes dramatically.”
This insight comes from my conversation with Marianne on the Cxnnect Podcast, hosted on YouTube, where we challenged traditional sales mindsets and shared actionable strategies.

When 🏄♂️ Scott Leese sends a podcast guest your way to discuss high velocity sales, you know the episode will be 🔥
Here are 5 tips Sellfire sales performance coach A.J. Mahar just shared:
Here’s his top advice for high-velocity selling:
1. Nail your opening line.
Start with confidence, not “Is this Paul?” 👊
Assume you’re speaking with the decision-maker.
2. Master your tone.
First impressions happen fast—5 to 10 seconds!
Be upbeat but stay composed.
3. Proactively address objections.
Bring up concerns before they do.
Don’t wait until closing to face blockers.
4. Book multi-stakeholder calls.
Always ask, “Who else needs to see this?”
Avoid the “I’ll need to talk to my partner” stall.
5. Seal the deal on the call.
Don’t risk losing momentum!
Send the contract and confirm commitment live.
Excited to read his upcoming book, Sales Lab Scripting! 📚

Showing Sales Professionals and Leaders How to Leverage Digital Influence to Create More and Better Opportunities - Sales Hall of Fame Inductee, Speaker, & Author
“Which chop of the axe fells the tree?”
This is probably my favorite sales koan. And I’m glad that it came out here in this segment from my recent appearance with Brandon Lee and Carson V. Heady on the Modern Selling Podcast.
The most successful sellers know that there isn’t one magic interaction that makes a deal happen.
Relationships, trust, and deals happen through a series of interactions, conversations, and engagements.
And what I love about LinkedIn is that it gives us a channel to have a lot of light touches with our prospects and customers.
You wouldn’t email someone every day and expect them to pay attention (or even open the emails).
But you have that ability to snag a little bit of attention when you post and comment online.
And when you comment, it doesn’t have to always be a super-insightful truth bomb. Often, it can just be connecting with the person who posted the content on the human-to-human level.
(Bummed that my video was a little smudgey, but this was a great conversation and I suggest you check out the podcast feed to hear the whole thing.)

If you’re in sales, you’ve probably thought, “Wow, cold calling sucks” at least once.
And you’re not alone—it can be uncomfortable and full of rejection. But I've started to see it differently after listening to Armand Farrokh and Nick Cegelski on the "Sell or Die" podcast with Jeffrey Gitomer.
Their message? Cold calling sucks and that's why it works.
- It forces you to refine your pitch and make every second count.
- Every rejection is just one step closer to a “yes.”
- It builds the resilience and skills that set great salespeople apart.
Sales isn’t about avoiding discomfort—it’s about embracing it and growing from it. If you’ve been struggling with cold calling, this episode offers some great advice to shift your mindset and improve your results.

The "which chop of the axe fells the tree?" koan you shared is an excellent metaphor for understanding the sales process and building relationships. A few key insights stand out:
1. There is rarely one single interaction or event that closes a deal. It happens through an accumulation of many conversations, touchpoints and engagements over time that cultivate trust and familiarity.
2. Successful salespeople understand the importance of maintaining consistent light touches and interactions with prospects, rather than just periodic explosive hard sells.
3. Platforms like LinkedIn provide an ideal channel for those lower-stakes, more frequent engagements through posting, commenting and networking. It allows you to steadily stay on the radar.
4. These light touches don't always need to be intensely insightful or salesy. Simply connecting on a human, casual level can be just as impactful for relationship building over the long run.
The axe metaphor drives home that closing a deal is the culmination of chipping away consistently, with each interaction and engagement gradually making an impression. There's a compounding effect when you maintain a steady flow of lower-pressure conversations and value-adding activities.
Your perspective highlights the importance of not just going for huge, sporadic swings, but developing a cadence of small, systematic connects. This more naturally escalates familiarity and rapport versus disruptive Hail Mary attempts.
It's a masterful sales philosophy - providing multiple light touches, being constantly additive, and letting relationships deepen organically through accumulation over time. This is how trusted advisors are formed and real opportunities crystalize.

Is your sales team singing from the same hymn sheet?
I believe in using consistent terminology to drive success in sales processes:
🔍 Opportunity: An ideal client with an unidentified problem
🎯 Lead: An ideal client with identified problems
🔔 Prospect: Engaged lead in your funnel
🤝 Client: Converted prospect you are currently working with.
How does your team align on terminology?
