As hurricanes and other natural disasters occur, CISA urges individuals to remain on alert for potential malicious cyber activity. Fraudulent emails and social media messages—often containing malicious links or attachments—are common after major natural disasters. Exercise caution in handling emails with hurricane-related subject lines, attachments, or hyperlinks. In addition, be wary of social media pleas, texts, or door-to-door solicitations relating to severe weather events. #phishingscams #disasterrecovery #ITeckSolutions https://lnkd.in/e9E6C2Tu

A vital piece of information to keep in mind after the hurricane events: be on the lookout for increased cybercriminal activity in fraudulent emails and social media messages, such as malicious links and comments. "Exercise caution in handling emails with hurricane-related subject lines, attachments, or hyperlinks. In addition, be wary of social media pleas, texts, or door-to-door solicitations relating to severe weather events. Scammers Hit Florida Hurricane Victims with Fake FEMA Claims, Malware Files As Florida grapples with the aftermath of #HurricaneHelene and braces for the potentially catastrophic #hurricaneMilton, #cybercriminals have found new opportunities to exploit the chaos surrounding disaster relief efforts. VERITI, a cybersecurity research firm, has identified three critical online threats that are targeting both individuals and organizations in the wake of these hurricanes. These include fraudulent FEMA claims, #phishing campaigns, and #malware disguised as legitimate FEMA documents. One of the most concerning trends is phishing attacks disguised as FEMA-related correspondence. #Cybercriminals are registering fake domains, such as https://lnkd.in/eE6VWyBU, designed to appear like official relief organizations. These websites deceive victims into providing sensitive data, such as #SocialSecurity numbers and #financial information, often by creating a false sense of urgency around grant opportunities or disaster aid. Phishing emails direct victims to these fraudulent sites, where their personal information is stolen and later sold or used in financial scams. Simply disgusting Jacob

As a FL native, I definitely wanted to provide this caution or warning to anyone in the path of Hurricane Helene, take precaution when receiving any unsolicited communication that is urging you to take action. Social engineering attacks are crafty, and unfortunately they often use current/natural events to prey on others. Like Tara Seals mentioned in the article, “Unfortunately, cybercriminals are likely planning a storm of their own, in the form of fraud and phishing efforts tied to interest and anxiety related to Helene.” So if you receive uncommon communication or communication through uncommon means, do some validation to confirm that an organization is legitimate and that the way they are communicating with you is the common means they utilize to do so. I know this can be challenging to do if you are experiencing power loss yourself. https://lnkd.in/g4VAiRfP

Hurricane Season is right around the corner. While businesses spend significant resources annually to ensure they have disaster mitigation plans, they spend little to no time preparing or defending against a cyber intrusion- yet the financial and reputational cost is significantly higher, as is the likelihood of becoming a victim. Forbes published a great article highlighting the similarities in 2023- Hurricane Season And Cybersecurity Have More In Common Than You Think https://lnkd.in/exUDqxMc

Phishing and scam attacks often surge during natural disasters, and the recent hurricane relief efforts in Florida have not been immune. Cybercriminals are exploiting the chaos by posing as FEMA assistance providers, launching phishing campaigns, and distributing malware disguised as FEMA documents. To protect against these threats, always verify the legitimacy of disaster relief communications, avoid unsolicited emails, and ensure your cybersecurity software is updated. Regular training for your team on phishing risks is also essential.
