From all perspectives, modern cars are more autonomous. My current vehicle can steer itself when in adaptive cruise mode, as long as I keep a hand on the wheel. We're now seeing some Level 3 autonomy, but the improvement in sensors and sensor data fusion needed to go from partial hands-on to fully hands-off is significant.
