I half agree with you Jon Acuff, but I think you are talking to your friends experiencing "rust-out," not "burnout". To confuse the two risks toxic optimism, telling someone experiencing burnout that they just need to push themselves harder is akin to telling someone drowning to swim better. In that moment they don't need a pep talk, they need a lifeguard. For the friends experiencing rust-out, they are like the beachgoers who fell asleep suntanning, waking up to the aches and pains of sunburn. Absolutely they are the ones who need a pep talk to rouse them from their slumber and get them back to swimming in the water. Burnout syndrome is a response to chronic work stress that develops progressively and can eventually become chronic, causing damage at a cognitive, emotional, and attitudinal level. Rust-out, however, is the malaise, lethargy, and chronic boredom from unstimulating work.
