This is an important point.
A quick reminder that despite not supporting the Treaty Principles Bill past select committee, National are still planning on attacking Treaty Principles in legislation. In an op-ed last week, Minister Paul Goldsmith notes that instead of taking a blunt-force approach (such as the Treaty Principles Bill) "National believes the better way to address the many legitimate questions about the role of the treaty in our democracy today is to progress the numerous specific changes we are making, issue by issue". I thought this was quite telling. What are these "numerous specific changes"? They include changing or removing up to 28 different Treaty principle clauses (see Newsroom article here: https://lnkd.in/gunBaigC). Despite National's lack of support of the TPB post-select committee, there will be plenty of piece-by-piece attempts to reduce the influence of Te Tiriti in law and policy in this country. It's important that we don't lose sight of all the moving pieces on the chessboard. #NZPol #Treaty
Nothing in this feels good or wise for our collective future :-(

1wPaul Goldsmith spoke at the TV Awards. He was clearly uncomfortable, made no eye contact with the audience, spoke for a very short time to those gathered , many of whom had no imminent work, encouraging us to create programmes that would sell overseas ... mmm ... not sure we can sell Anzac coverage overseas (Whakaata Māori) even though it won Best Coverage of Live Event for the second year in a row? Do we stop making all programmes that don't make a profit? Children's programmes? Fair Go became Fair Gone ... Imagine the day when you only see politicians on Tik Tok? Oh excuse me, this is already happening. Everything is a business for this government, there is no compassion for people. The 'revelation' that gangs increased at the same rate no matter who has been in power was disappointing, and Mr Luxon was quoting incorrect data obtained from police records, there has been no apology for this, just an F bomb when queried by reporters? Do we control the OCR? No, another claim of successful economic management that has no truth to it. One year in power and 10,000 more people are unemployed and we haven't yet hit rock bottom. Be careful National, you have two years left to effect positive change for all New Zealanders.
