During World War II, the U.S. Navy faced substantial losses in its submarine fleet, with 52 submarines and over 3,500 submariners lost in the line of duty. These submarines, now on eternal patrol, carried out daring missions that were critical to the Allied war effort, disrupting enemy supply lines, gathering intelligence, and sinking significant tonnage of enemy shipping. Each loss represented a profound sacrifice and demonstrated the bravery and resilience of the submariners who operated in perilous conditions beneath the sea. The legacy of these submarines and their crews serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of war and the heroism displayed by those who served. Their contributions significantly impacted the course of the war, despite the high risks and ultimate sacrifices they faced. T oday, we honor their memory and valor, recognizing the silent service's vital role in achieving victory during World War II. As we reflect on their service, we commit to preserving their stories and ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten. The USS Gudgeon (SS-211) is not on the plack. It was presumed sunk on 18 APR 1944 with a loss of all hands near Iwo Jima by the Japanese. A monument to the Grudgeon is located in Punchbowl National Cemetary on Oahu. My father was assigbed to the Grudgeon in Pearl Harbor before the boats final patrol, but before its departure, he was ordered to a destroyer RIP to the officers & crew of thr Grudgeon.

Just for information, on top of the 52 US submarines lost during WW2 the Royal Navy lost 74 boats, the Soviet Union lost 98 boats and France lost 59 boats.
Was the USS Pampano found?
Well said and very true 👍
I recall reading about a problem the U.S. had with their Submarine-launched torpedoes not detonating upon impact which resulted in the enemy warship coming back & sinking the submarine that watched, in horror, from their Periscopes as the torpedoed would hit the enemy ships & just bounce off & not explode….how unfortunate!
The chapel at the lower base in Groton has a pew named after each boat lost. When I had Saturday duty and was relieved on Sunday morning, I looked forward to and found it moving in attending Mass there.
