"Know where your audience is." There's a slow-burning internal culture war at a lot of general interest/local news media outlets over doing more on YouTube, according to several conversations I've had the last few weeks. This includes the next generation of startup digital news outlets. I say slow burning because, in many cases, there's already a consensus: they're just not interested. That sounds crazy, right (especially when you look at that chart)? But the challenge for many YouTube advocates in general/local news is that most of these publications are staffed by people without video backgrounds (local TV is the exception; they're all in largely by clipping and posting existing content). There's a resurgence in local news media. But they face the same old challenge: make content in the way THEY like or go where the audience is and meet the audience on their terms. If you don't have a YouTube strategy in 2025 you're in trouble.
EMarketer predicts that next year, US monthly social network users will exceed linear TV viewers for the first time. 🤯 Of course, share is different than consumption. Linear TV will still command more video viewing time spent than social media and YouTube in the next couple of years. There’s still time to adjust your 2025 media planning and marketing efforts.
