The United Cybersecurity Alliance and our Global Council for Responsible AI have been invited to participate in the development of the first-ever General-Purpose AI Code of Practice by the European Artificial Intelligence Office and the European Commission. This is a groundbreaking step toward ensuring the responsible and ethical use of AI across the EU. The European AI Office, established within the European Commission, plays a critical role in implementing the AI Act. As the center of AI expertise across the EU, the office is focused on fostering trustworthy AI, protecting against AI risks, and ensuring AI systems are safe and beneficial to society. This collaboration provides a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI governance and international cooperation. As a key contributor to the AI Act, which is the world’s first comprehensive legal framework on AI, the European AI Office is tasked with enforcing general-purpose AI regulations, promoting innovation, and protecting the health, safety, and fundamental rights of people. The AI Act ensures legal certainty for businesses and encourages a strategic, coherent, and global approach to AI development. Reasonable AI safety - 'Resistance is futile' Please join me at the Australian Information Security Association (AISA) Sydney Branch meeting on Thursday week (14th Nov) to explore how to use the FAIR Institute FAIR-AIR playbook (https://lnkd.in/gPmDM_zb) to build AI safeguards informed by the Open FAIR risk quantification standard. This balanced approach ensures AI safety and offers reasonable risk management without stifling AI innovations. AI is here to stay. The Australian Government has just closed the public consultation process for "Mandatory AI safeguard" (https://lnkd.in/gvQT7pii). In addition, the recent FTC crackdown on misleading AI promises highlights AI-related regulatory risk (https://lnkd.in/gAVzq6mt). The mandatory disclosure for ransomware payment under the draft Cyber Security Law 2024 shows a similar shift in the Australian regulatory approach pivoting from compliance to disclosure. It is reasonable to expect future regulatory obligations to also include disclosure of AI risks. Beyond the Evidence! Reading about the advancements in digital forensics recently got me to reflect on the hidden layers behind every cyber investigation. Did you know that digital forensics is evolving rapidly, with technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolutionizing how we uncover evidence? Let’s start with the data—modern investigations involve analyzing terabytes of digital evidence from devices, networks, and cloud services. AI can process this data exponentially faster than humans, scanning emails, social media, and logs to identify patterns and anomalies. However, the environmental cost of data storage and processing is significant. Data centers consume massive amounts of energy, contributing to carbon emissions. The journey from raw data to actionable intelligence also involves challenges like automating evidence collection, enhancing audio/video files, and detecting deepfakes. While AI helps tackle these hurdles, it comes with ethical concerns, such as privacy violations and biases in decision-making. In some cases, the very tools meant to protect us can be exploited by cybercriminals for malicious purposes. Moreover, forensic investigations rely heavily on collaboration across borders, navigating legal and cultural differences. This complexity requires robust frameworks to ensure accountability and fairness while leveraging AI’s potential responsibly. The reality is apparent: every digital trace we leave behind impacts the environment, privacy, and justice. But we have the power to drive responsible innovation.
