“The NREL reliability team regularly receives reports of glass breakage in silicon modules unrelated to direct damage from maintenance or storm impacts. The team found that the average quality of solar glass appears to be decreasing over time.” Initial costs can be reduced with thinner glass, which may seem attractive to some purchasing teams. Yet, the long-term cost and maintenance can significantly impact a project's ROI if cheaper panels are installed. “It used to be the case that modules would pass the IEC 61215 static load test with a big safety factor,” said National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Teresa Barnes. “Today, modules are either barely passing the base static load test or not passing with higher safety factors.” My team at Sinovoltaics inspects modules every day, all over the world. Verifying equipment has been our staple for over a decade. More and more we are working with buyers to review module contracts before production begins. Reviewing module standards to verify that the modules being described are truly modules of quality. The mass deployment of renewable energy is not the goal here.
