Most problems are failures of imagination, failures of belief, or failures of coordination. Railways have a huge of burden of coordination due to very low tolerances: few vehicles, many passengers, safety measured in cm or mm, right voltage, right bits and bytes, etc. So a successful railway in Europe is possible but it requires higher amounts of faith, imagination and coordination than in other sectors, with an emphasis on coordination. Tight coordination depends on extraordinary institutions. All this in a sector that is partially protected from market pressures, both for natural and man-made reasons. It's not an easy challenge!

South West Sydney is the fastest growing region in NSW, but has some of the worst access to rail transport across greater Sydney.
It was fantastic to have Jo Haylen take centre stage at our final event of the year. I had an engaging discussion with her about the future of rail links—check out our conversation.

With the Amtrak Chicago to Minneapolis Borealis line going beyond expectations of ridership. With the popularity of train travel in the U.S. rising, there's a growing movement to make high-speed rail, already established in Asia and Europe, available across the U.S. Watch an Urban Innovators talk from earlier this year by, Richard Harnish, executive director of the High Speed Rail Alliance, outlining the progress of high-speed rail in the West and what will be needed to implement high speed rail in the Midwest and between the Midwest and East Coasts. https://lnkd.in/d6iRTyXn

Simply window dressing. This new Government has still failed to grasp the true level of investment required in UK rail Powers alone do not provide new infrastructure, new lines and renewals. Local leaders simply do not have the financial resources to uplift services through new capacity. Time is ticking. Starmer and Reeves have got caught in analysis paralysis and the shift between Haigh to Alexander at such an early stage is a further distraction. Even the announcement of one major initiative with real world deliverables alongside the political shenanigans of ownership would be useful. As it stands, the Government will barely be able to deliver GBR within this Parliament and the real world will see the impact of nationalised contracts alongside Open Access with the same parent owner. New powers don’t make a better railway. Investment, leadership and great management do.
We're introducing new powers that will enable local leaders to shape rail services to better meet the needs of their communities. The changes will help deliver a rail network that works for local residents, improving train timetabling, accessibility and connections with other transport modes.
