Over 25 Million Out-of-School Children in Pakistan😡 😡 😡 According to the recently published report titled The Missing Third of Pakistan by the Pakistan Alliance for Maths and Science (PAMS), the education crisis in Pakistan is severe, with a particular focus on out-of-school children (OOSC). Based on data from the 2023 Population and Housing Census, the report reveals that 25.373 million children, or 36% of all children in Pakistan, are not attending school. These OOSC consist of boys and girls aged 5 to 16, with over half of them being girls. The majority, 74%, live in rural areas, while 26% are in urban regions. Moreover, 79% of OOSC have never been enrolled in school, while 21% have dropped out.😡 😡 😡 More than half of the children who have never enrolled in school fall between the ages of 5 and 9, a crucial age group representing 45% of the school-going population. Late school enrollment poses a significant threat to Pakistan's future literacy rates, with this problem expected to worsen without immediate intervention. Punjab is particularly affected, with 30 of its 45 tehsils having the highest numbers of OOSC. Major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta are also heavily impacted.😡 😡 😡 There is substantial variation in dropout rates between tehsils. For instance, in Rawalpindi, 50% of OOSC are dropouts, with the rate rising to 70% in Kotli Sattian. In Balochistan’s Kachhi district, 89% of children in Sanni are out of school, compared to 51% in Dhadar.😡 😡 😡 Gender disparities are also severe, especially in Sujawal, Sindh, where 91% of rural girls in some tehsils are out of school. The report emphasizes the need for targeted, tehsil-specific interventions to address these disparities. Low female literacy is linked to higher dropout rates and lower educational access. A coordinated effort among provincial education departments is essential, particularly in the 12 most underperforming districts, which are home to over 4.2 million OOSC. 😡 😡 😡
