As we head into the end of the week, I always think of the many cleaners that are either finishing the week or have cleans to be performed. And like Rosie in the video, the question I ask is - are the cleaners getting treated as they should be? Yes, the impression in the video is of a gig worker, and the first impression that comes to mind is an Uber driver, or maybe a DoorDash delivery person, but what if I told you that the Fair Work Commission changes, due August 26, 2024, class cleaners as gig workers in Australia. Why? Because most cleaners are underpaid, mistreated, and incorrectly classed as contractors (over 80% percent of the cleaning industry operates like this - Sham Contracting) when they actually employees. So I ask you, if your cleaners, like Rosie are trying to earn a living, but getting to some payment that equates to $7 per hour, do you think this is fair? There is a solution - for everyone to accept that all workers deserve to be paid correctly, even if this means that the cleaning costs will go up. And just like Rosie, when she sees an opportunity to get a well paid job, where she is treated well, we get cleaners approach us. Cleaners hear from their relatives, their friends, and our current cleaners about how we treat our team, and contact us, asking how do they get a job with us. And to you, what is the outcome? A cleaner that is so appreciative to have the job, so happy to at last be paid correctly, so happy to have the training and support, they do their ultimate best to deliver to you, our clients and us, the best standard they can. So as we all end a week, I ask for some thought to be given to the Gig workers - the ones that work the hours most of us don't like to even think about working, and ask are they being treated fairly?

What was your very first job? Not the one after formal education, but the part-time job you had while still in school. My eldest has just landed her first weekend job, stepping onto the path of financial independence. (Let’s not talk about the additional mum taxi duties it’s going to mean getting her to and from work…..!) My first job was at a little ice cream stall at the local shopping centre on Sundays. I wore a straw bowler hat and a striped white apron. Before long, I moved on to spend weekends at a jeweller’s with Nick - him polishing watches, me displaying lladro figures. Fond memories. Here’s a photo of number one off to her first shift, with a bounce in her step. Where did you work for your first job? What did you learn—resilience, teamwork, collaboration, accuracy, attention to detail? Feel free to share any pictures you have too. #firstjob #careerjourney #professionalgrowth #learningexperience

🌟 Embracing Change and Building Dreams: My Journey 🌟 Reflecting on my career journey always fills me with gratitude and a sense of wonder at life's twists and turns. It all started in the dynamic world of retail, where I honed my skills and passion for customer service. My time at Marks And Spencers was truly transformative, as I navigated various roles - from managing the bustling cafe to overseeing cash operations and delving into the intricate world of HR. Along the way, I had the privilege of meeting extraordinary individuals who left a lasting impact on me. However, life had an unexpected turn with the arrival of my first bundle of joy, Charlotte. Parenthood reshaped my priorities, prompting me to seek a more fulfilling balance between work and family. With the arrival of my second child, Ellie, and my husband's job taking him away often, I found myself juggling multiple hats with grace and determination. Amidst these changes, an opportunity arose to join my auntie's cleaning company, a business she had nurtured for over two decades. For nearly four years, I immersed myself in this venture, learning the ins and outs of the cleaning industry while cherishing the flexibility it offered. Then came the pivotal moment - the decision to embark on my own entrepreneurial journey. Two and a half years ago, I took the leap of faith to establish my own cleaning company, C.E Cleaning, here in our beloved North Shields. The path hasn't always been smooth, but every challenge has been met with resilience and unwavering dedication. Today, as I reflect on this journey, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunities, the lessons learned, and the incredible people who have supported me along the way. Indeed, life is full of surprises, and I've come to realize that embracing change is the key to unlocking our true potential. I wouldn't trade this journey for anything in the world, for it has led me to where I am today - pursuing my passion, building a thriving business, and cherishing every moment with my family. Here's to the endless possibilities that the universe has in store for each of us! www.cecleaning.co.uk info@cecleaning.co.uk 🌟 #EntrepreneurialJourney #Gratitude #CECleaning #cleaning #cleaningservices #journey #cleaningindustry #retail

Who would forget the fundamentals when we were initially learning how to negotiate, and hunt for the best deals at a reasonable price? Taking a day off from work allows me to go back to the fundamentals and decide what our family will eat and where to shop. It also entails stepping away from roles, deadlines, and uniforms. #workdiary #hospitalitylife #mydiary

Let me tell you about a time when I quit. I worked at Winners (Canada’s version of TJ Maxx) for two years when I was about 19, starting as a cashier and then moving to customer service. I started to pick up a few shifts in the warehouse, and I loved it there. The warehouse team was fun, working at a fast pace with music playing.. No angry customers, and it felt like a real team effort. So, I asked to be transferred there or at least have more warehouse shifts. But the store manager told me I was too good at customer service, which I was—but I didn’t enjoy it. After that, I didn’t get any more warehouse shifts. Then, one week, I was scheduled to work in the shoe department, even though I’d never worked on the floor before. I showed up for my shift, and within two hours, I realised I hated it. On my 15-minute break, I did some quick calculations and decided I could afford a couple of weeks of unemployment while I found something new. So, I walked over to the duty manager and quit on the spot. Looking back, it’s the only time I’ve ever walked away from a job so suddenly. But I just couldn’t spend another minute in a role that drained me, at a company I could see didn't value me. Now, with what I know about strengths, I see how powerful it is when people are allowed to thrive in what they enjoy and excel at. It makes all the difference. Have you ever had a moment where you just had to walk away? Let me know in the comments.
