As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month, we reflect on the rich cultural traditions and wisdom passed down through generations. One powerful symbol in many Native cultures is the concept of the Four Winds, which represent the four cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. Each direction holds its own unique significance: North: Symbolizing wisdom, strength, and the guidance of elders. South: Representing growth, renewal, and youth. East: Associated with new beginnings, inspiration, and the rising sun. West: Reflecting introspection, maturity, and the setting sun. These directions remind us of the interconnectedness of all things and the balance required to navigate life. As we honor Native American communities this month, let us also take a moment to reflect on how we can carry forward their teachings of respect, unity, and understanding. Let’s commit to learning more, supporting Native voices, and acknowledging the deep cultural contributions that continue to shape our world. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #FourWinds #CulturalAwareness #NativeAmericanHistory #RespectAndUnity

The 100th anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 was celebrated on June 2, 2024. The act granted full citizenship to all Indigenous people born in the United States. Here are some things to know about the Indian Citizenship Act: Native Americans have been part of the history of the United States for thousands of years. In the late 19th century, the US government built detention camps on Native American homelands and established a separate legal system for them. The act did not include voting rights, which were not settled for another 40 years. Indigenous people continue to fight for voting rights, with some suing the state for voting barriers. There is work to be done still. Some legal experts believe that the act was a retroactive correction for the mistake of allowing tribal members to serve in World War I as if they were citizens. Many Native Americans hold dual citizenship in a federally recognized tribe and the United States.

In recognition of National Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate the vibrant history and culture of Native American communities throughout our network of facilities, especially in New Mexico, where the spirit of Indigenous heritage enriches our lives every day. Karl Hernandez, LNHA, New Mexico Market President, shares, "In New Mexico, we honor Native American Heritage Month by recognizing our Indigenous populations' unique contributions and traditions. Through education, cultural events, and celebrating traditional cuisine, we strive to foster respect, understanding, and a deeper connection with the diverse cultures of the Pueblos, Navajo Nation, Apache, and other tribal nations. Celebrating this heritage also means remembering the past and present struggles faced by Native communities, acknowledging both historical trauma and the ongoing challenges Indigenous people encounter." "We’re grateful to have a large population of Native American residents and staff who share their wisdom, culture, and history with us daily. They remind us that each nation holds its own identity and sovereignty and that Native Americans are not a monolith but a community of distinct cultures and voices." As we recognize and honor Native American Heritage Month, let’s commit to learning about the rich and complex histories of the Indigenous peoples who have shaped, and continue to shape, this country. Together, we can cultivate a more inclusive and respectful environment for all. As we begin to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the rich history, vibrant cultures, and resilience of Native American communities. With over 3.7 million American Indians and Alaska Natives living in the United States, it's essential that we recognize and honor their contributions to our country's fabric. This month is a time to listen, learn, and amplify the voices of Native American communities. It's a time to acknowledge the historical injustices and ongoing struggles that Native Americans face, from land theft and forced assimilation to inadequate access to healthcare and education. But it's also a time to celebrate the beauty, diversity, and strength of Native American cultures. From the majestic landscapes of the Navajo Nation to the vibrant art and traditions of the many tribes that call our country home, there is so much to learn from and appreciate. As we move forward, let's commit to creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all. Let's work to break down barriers and build bridges between communities. Let's listen to and amplify the voices of Native American leaders, artists, and activists. And let's start by educating ourselves and use our platforms to raise awareness and promote understanding.
