Sustainable Flying Soars To Top Priority ♻️ Stefan Krikken, the head of airfreight at DSV, informed attendees at TIACA’s Air Cargo Forum in Miami this week that major forwarders will be hesitant to partner with "dirty" airlines when deciding on their airfreight contracts, especially as sustainability deadlines approach. With this announcement, it seems fair to say that environmentally friendly airline operations are becoming increasingly important in order to be in league with bigger forwarders. For many smaller airlines this change may be seen as a challenge not needed at the moment, but Krikken continued to focus in on the cruciality of EV investment. He mentioned that DSV is committing "a substantial amount of money" to EV trucking and solar panels. However, he emphasized that the actions taken by its subcontractors are equally important when deciding where to source its airfreight capacity. Every year, the world consumes over 418 exajoules (EJ)—or 116,000 terawatt-hours (TWh)—of final energy, mainly by burning fossil fuels and generating heat. Part of this generated heat is harnessed for useful purposes, such as producing electricity or driving chemical reactions, but most is unused. This unused “waste heat” is given off to the surrounding environment through exhausts or effluents at different temperature levels. Can strategic partnerships accelerate the decarbonization of airfreight? Lufthansa Cargo and A.P. Moller - Maersk have signed a pivotal agreement to utilize sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on key routes, marking a significant step toward reducing CO₂ emissions in air logistics. This collaboration will see Lufthansa Cargo deploying 400 metric tonnes of SAF on behalf of Maersk by the end of 2024, aiming to cut emissions by at least 1,200 metric tonnes during a peak period for airfreight. Ashwin Bhat, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, highlighted SAF's role in aviation's energy transition, noting, “With Maersk, we are jointly making a valuable contribution with the new agreement.” He emphasized that sustainable flying requires a modern fleet and increased operational efficiency for long-term impact. Morten Bo Christiansen, Head of Energy Transition at Maersk, underscored the partnership's importance, stating, “Cutting greenhouse gas emissions from airfreight is one of the most challenging tasks within decarbonizing global logistics. We aim to achieve net-zero emissions across all operations by 2040.” The SAF, produced from biogenic residues like used cooking oil via the HEFA process, will be sourced through the Lufthansa Group’s established European suppliers. Since 2021, Lufthansa Cargo has offered SAF to customers through its Sustainable Choice add-on service, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable aviation.
