In April 2024, Barcelona hosted the UN Ocean Decade Conference 2024, drawing over 1,500 delegates from across the globe. CORDAP’s focus was on bringing corals to the forefront, discussing how the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) apply to coral reefs and cannot be achieved if we lose coral reefs. At the conference, we delved into the scientific requirements for meeting the Framework's objectives for coral reefs. We also spotlighted the initiatives and opportunities within philanthropically-operated research fleet, showcasing cutting-edge assets to foster collaboration between researchers and the philanthropic sector, with a particular emphasis on exploring deep and cold water corals. Despite the multiple international commitments made at the UN Ocean Decade Conference at various fronts, much remains to be done to ensure the future of coral reefs. CORDAP stands as the sole international organization wholly committed to funding global research and development for tropical and cold-water coral restoration and conservation. It operates as a unique global accelerator, facilitating collaboration across jurisdictions, sharing scientific insights and intellectual property. ⚡ The SOILGUARD consortium recently convened in Málaga for its biannual meeting, celebrating 42 months of progress on our Horizon Europe journey. Hosted by the remarkable team at the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, the event proved both productive and inspiring. Our sincere gratitude to IUCN for their exceptional hospitality and flawless organisation! 🔧 We discussed advancements in the SOILGUARDIANS App, with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) sharing progress on this innovative tool and exploring ways to make its predictive features even more accessible and user-friendly for stakeholders. 🌍 Teams from Natural Resources Institute Finland / Luonnonvarakeskus (LUKE), Leitat Technological Center, European Landowners Organisation (ELO), and others presented plans for future events to showcase SOILGUARD’s findings. 🔬 New insights and publications from experts at ETH Zürich and the UA - Universidad de Alicante / Universitat d'Alacant (UA) highlighted soil biodiversity's critical role in ecosystem health. 📄 We also advanced policy briefs and factsheets developed in collaboration with the IUCN European Regional Office and the European Landowners' Organization, aiming to support the Soil Monitoring Law and other crucial policies. 🌿 As we near the end of this incredible journey, we’re thrilled to announce plans for a final joint event with sibling projects, reinforcing our shared mission to protect soil biodiversity and promote sustainable soil health for future generations. 📰 Stay tuned for updates on new tools and apps, upcoming conferences and workshops, and the latest in soil biodiversity research. This is why the biodiverse cities project has set out to implement Nature-based solutions across several cities in the north sea region with several important purposes. ·         Halt biodiversity loss ·         Build resilience toward climate change ·         Support ecosystem services ·         Promote nature inclusive cities and societies Nature-based solutions provide important Ecosystem-services with important effects for both people and nature, including Flood & drought control, Water purification, Heat stress mitigation and Nutrient cycling 🌍 . Therefore, NbS can provide several critical benefits for our nature, for our wellbeing and for our ability to withstand climate change. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are a critical tool in our fight to restore the ocean. With the ambitious target of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, it's essential to understand why this figure is so crucial. This target is rooted in scientific consensus and endorsed by organisations like the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Global Protected Areas Programme and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), indicating that safeguarding 30% of the ocean can significantly enhance biodiversity, support ecosystem resilience, and promote sustainable fisheries management. However, questions have arisen regarding the effective management and monitoring of MPAs: How can we ensure that these protected areas remain intact sanctuaries for marine life, facilitating ocean recovery? Tomorrow, at Innoceana's 'REAL PEOPLE, REAL TALKS' panel during one of the #OceanDecade24 Conference Satellite Events moderated by our team member, Inga Thordar, we'll delve into these pressing issues alongside a diverse lineup of experts. Biodiversity, Climate Change & Slovene Studies 🌱 Pleased to share the Winter 2024 Newsletter from the Society for Slovene Studies (SSS), an organization I’ve been privileged to serve as both a member and former editor. The SSS continues to promote Slovenian culture, history, and scholarship, connecting local insights with global challenges. This issue caught my eye for two reasons: 1️⃣ Ecology: A feature on climate change’s impact on Slovenia's prized crops highlights the connection between local agriculture and global sustainability—a theme central to Integral Ecology, as explored by the Laudato Si' Research Institute (LSRI) and #IERN: - Biodiversity and agriculture are interconnected. - Climate adaptation must prioritize sustainability. - Slovenia’s experiences offer valuable lessons for global challenges. 2️⃣ Scholarship in Action: From cultural preservation to innovative research, the SSS links Slovenia’s rich past with its dynamic present and promising future. IHE Delft alumnus Daniel Ascúntar Rios played a key role in developing Colombia's Ambiental Corazon de Pance Park, which will join UNESCO’s Global Network of Water Museums (UNESCO-IHP). Facing urban sprawl that threatened vital aquifers supplying water to the city and region, Ascúntar Rios led efforts to acquire land and create a large park featuring nature-based solutions to protect water resources, biodiversity, culture, and heritage. In an interview, Ascúntar Rios highlighted his IHE Delft connection as essential to the park’s nature-based solutoins and its recognition as a Water Museum. The park was launched as part of the 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (#COP16) in Cali earlier this year and it is set to open to the public in March 2025.
