Leaving Tuesday morning to document this journey: ⛰️ 🎥 What is Monkman Pass, and what is the purpose of our documentary? In the 1930s, the pass was proposed as a way to transport goods across the Rocky Mountains between Alberta and BC. Alex Monkman and a team of volunteers planned to construct a permanent route from Grande Prairie to Prince George, but before they could get government support for the project, they had to prove they could transport a bag of grain through the pass via automobile. Despite successfully proving this was possible, the pass was never built as many of the volunteers were lost to World War II recruitment and Monkman became ill. In the years since, Mother Nature has reclaimed much of the trail. In the early 2000’s, large portions of the original path were reestablished into a 67km hiking trail to commemorate Monkman's vision and efforts. It is now known as the Monkman Memorial Trail. This summer, our team of adventurers will hike the full length of the Monkman Pass while documenting the process. Just like Monkman, we will transport a bag of grain but will also be including a roll of pulp paper, a small container of crude oil, a letter from the Mayor of Grande Prairie, and a Ford Model T diecast car all to be delivered to the corresponding recipients in Prince George. The diecast car is simply a means to represent the original 1932 Ford Model A that was used by Monkman and the trailblazers. Some of the questions we’re hoping to answer are: What would it look like now in terms of preservation of our natural wonders if Monkman had succeeded? Plus, how would it have affected our communities today in terms of trade, transport, and travel?
