What an honor to be published (again) in Nature Magazine, one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the world! 📰 Publishing an article in Nature is remarkable, publishing TWO articles in Nature is truly exceptional. After a first publication in 2020 on enzymatic depolymerization of PET, this new article reinforces Carbios’ scientific leadership in enzymatic biotechnologies by presenting enzyme-embedded PLA that is 100% compostable at ambient temperature. Developing an efficient enzyme that can withstand the 170°C needed to introduce it into PLA is an outstanding scientific feat! 🔬👩🔬👨🔬 This achievement would not have been possible without the hard work, passion, and dedication of our researchers, engineers, and partners. A special mention to our longstanding collaborator who co-authored the article, TBI - Toulouse Biotechnology Institute, Bio & Chemical Engineering, (joint research unit associating INSA Toulouse, CNRS - Centre national de la recherche scientifique and INRAE). Happy news!😊 A framework to improve biocatalysts for sustainable biotechnology has begun as a collaborative effort between The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) and researchers from Germany and The Netherlands! 💥   As we all know, we need to replace industrial methods for production of chemicals with more sustainable biotechnological processes to reduce the use of fossil fuels and the production of greenhouse gases.🌍 Developing cost-effective bio-based processes require the creation of stable and selective enzymes that serve as efficient biocatalysts. Unfortunately, using traditional methods to modify and test improved enzymes is a slow and labor-intensive job. To speed up the process of enzyme engineering, an international team including scientists from DTU Biosustain, The Charité in Berlin in Germany, Leiden University in the Netherlands and the Research Center Jülich in Germany will join forces to combine machine learning and directed evolution with automated workflows and efficient selection processes in metabolically rewired bacteria ('selection strains') to address challenges and expand the possibilities for enzyme engineering. 👏👏👏   This interdisciplinary collaboration will include the generation of massive DNA sequence libraries, the application of bacterial strains that introduce additional mutations to increase the solution space, and the selection of the best enzyme variants based on high-throughput screening procedures.    🔈“With this integrated approach, enzymes can be engineered faster and more reliably than before and we are very excited about that”, says postdoc Enrico Orsi from DTU Biosustain, who is lead author of the article.   🔈 Professor Pablo Ivan Nikel from DTU Biosustain adds: "This framework will accelerate the pace at which we construct cell factories, and we are excited to incorporate this framework into our existing research lines embedded in the biofoundry".    The research results of the collaboration have just been published as a perspective in Nature Communications: https://lnkd.in/dShkPgkr #biotechnology #engineering #sustainability #biofoundry Novo Nordisk Foundation DTU - Technical University of Denmark

Last week I defended my master's thesis titled "Characterization of the *Pseudomonas benzenivorans* 1477 strain and its ability to synthesize and degrade polyhydroxyalkanoates", which is the fruit of my stay at the CIB Margarita Salas-CSIC. I am deeply grateful for all the learning and support I have received during these last months. Finally, this work received a score of 9.3, reflecting the interest in the production of bioplastics to reduce the dependence on fossil resources and optimize the circularization of plastic waste through biotechnological tools. I must also appreciate the possibility of participating in the "JAE Intro" programme of the CSIC, which has allowed me to continue my professional development in the exciting world of research. #Research #JAEIntro #CSIC #Biotechnology

Have you ever thought about doing a student project? If the answer is yes, then you’re in luck! At our 11th Intercollegiate Biotechnology Symposium “Symbioza”, we will be hosting a discussion panel with three iGEM teams, which are taking part in their Synthetic Biology Competition! During the discussion panel, guests will be talking about what synthetic biology is and how it’s incorporated into the iGEM Competition. Speakers will give advice based on their iGEM experience, including tips on how to start your student project, how to assemble a team and find funding. Here is a description of two of the teams, which will be taking part in the panel: iGEM JU Krakow is the first ever team from the Jagiellonian University to participate in iGEM. The goal of our project is to use the SHERLOCK system to detect the Polish strain of Prymnesium parvum. Prymnesium parvum, or the so-called "golden algae," is the species of algae responsible for the ecological disaster in the Oder River in July 2022. Despite the huge threat posed by this organism, time-consuming and ineffective methods are still being used to detect it. We will develop a lateral flow test and a microfluidic chip to efficiently detect the organism in environmental samples. IFB-Gdansk 2023 became the first Polish team to compete in the iGEM competition in 4 years, paving the way for many more aspiring students. Their project called EDC-Seas was awarded a gold medal for impressing the judges with the genetic constructs of their design, as well as educational and entrepreneurial activities. The goal of the project was to design a biological filter containing immobilised enzymes that can degrade phthalates present in water samples. 🌿 Exciting News! 🌿 I'm thrilled to share that as a PhD student at Lund University, I am now involved with the BryoMolecules project. This innovative initiative is dedicated to unlocking the potential of Europe's overlooked mosses and liverworts, which are rich in biologically active compounds (BACs) with immense potential in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. BryoMolecules is conducting the first large-scale, systematic search for these valuable compounds, aiming to establish sustainable, bio-based production methods. By overcoming the challenges of low natural growth rates and large-scale extraction, the project will reduce environmental impact, minimize reliance on wild harvesting, and contribute to eco-friendly product development.
