Feeling very inspired after Tuesday night's Salon Canberra event ‘Enhancing Communities through Infrastructure, Placemaking and Public Art’. The beautiful theatrette at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia was completely full. Thank you to Catherine Carter for providing this opportunity. There were many takeaways from the panel that stuck with me, but my favourite was from Nikos Kalogeropoulos: We are creating fewer reasons to step into the public realm. We create bigger, more elaborate homes, with home gyms, home theatres etc. We drive from these ultra-comfortable homes straight to our sterile, climate-controlled offices and then home again. And yet, so often are the memorable moments made elsewhere, in the public realm. In the spaces between destinations. This was a thought-provoking moment for me, that something seemingly trivial can have a huge impact on the community and its engagement. We need to include art and the public realm in our daily lives. How much beauty and culture do we miss? How many moments of connection do we simply, subconsciously, refuse to experience?

On site (Sunday-Tuesday this week) and there’s always something to fix before you can actually start work. 😤 Where’s the bloody carpet? 😤 Why is the power not in yet or where it should be? 😤 The stand won’t fit, why is the space smaller than expected? 😳 So and so’s not turned up! 😳 Time’s ticking. Time costs, we can’t stretch this out, got to fix it NOW!? And many more… BUT…. We always get it sorted, the client is (usually) none the wiser and the outcome is always a success. We work WITH the organisers/contractors/people on site towards a simple resolution. Usually in record time (if only government could take a leaf…😉). It’s this “can do” common sense approach that we (and so many others in our industry) just ride out as the ‘everyday’. We are the fixers, problem solvers, collaborators, the thinkers AND doers, the unsung heroes!💪😂 Here’s to the mighty exhibition and events industry and those that work within it!👊 Disclaimer.
