Back in the olden days… family flashback to 50 years or so ago (before our time) Hand drawings were still a thing. But so was asbestos. And Imperial measurements. Errggggh. This home was less than half the size of average Aus homes now - but families were on average larger. And built at a much more affordable price. (Genuine 1969 prices). This home is around 120sqm. It housed a family of 7 who shared a single bathroom and toilet. With shared bedrooms between siblings. Busting bladders aside: it housed the life of a family. Rather than curating the adjacent lives of siblings and their parents. The whole house is documented on 1 page. A far cry from the documents required to build now. But… - the main living areas face west to the street, with plate glass windows baking the living in afternoon summers. - the main yard and all the cricket games were to the east. But the only connection to it was via laundry or views from bedrooms and bathroom. The living missed out. - the 2nd bedroom had almost no natural light. - the roofed deck blocked winter sun from the main living spaces. Simply orienting the house on its site more carefully could have dramatically influenced comfort and connection for the family in this home on this land. And that would have cost nothing at the time. There’s plenty to learn from our pasts. Often we have learned that we just do not learn from our history. Suburbs are still built with poorly oriented homes. We sometimes seem unwilling to take the good (smaller homes, closer lives, more affordable mortgages, simpler processes) but recognise and leave behind the bad (poor home orientation simply to suit an arbitrary street and fenceline, toxic build materials, poorly performing homes - too hot and too cold - and so on.)
