Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 🚺 and in our #Inequalities podcast for #FutureFramedTV, Alice Krozer speaks to Lydia Cordero Cabrera, women’s rights activist specialized in familial and sexual violence and executive director of the organization Casa Amiga Esther Chavez Cano, a safe house for women victims of violence in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. 🟣 In this episode, we explore the circumstances that have led to the widespread violence against women in Ciudad Juarez and the creation of Casa Amiga as a sanctuary offering protection and support for women escaping abusive environments. 🏭 We dive into the historical context of a place like Ciudad Juarez, where its proximity to the U.S. border and the presence of maquiladoras—foreign-run manufacturing operations in Mexico—created key factors for unequal working conditions for women like exploitative working conditions for women, long hours that neglect childcare responsibilities, and organized crime operations such as human trafficking. 👨👩👧👦 Additionally, we delve into the vital role of family in preventing further violence. By offering proper guidance and education to young boys, setting positive examples, and shielding children from both organized crime and violent environments, families can help break the cycle of abuse. 📺 You can watch the full episode on this relevant and urgent topic by following the link in the first comment 🔗

The latest report on femicides by UN Women and UNODC has shown 140 women and girls die every day at the hands of their partner or a close relative, which means one woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes. Africa recorded the highest rates of intimate partner and family-related femicide, followed by the Americas, and then Oceania. Only 37 countries reported data on intimate partner and family-related femicides in 2023, a sharp decline from 75 countries in 2020. “Violence against women and girls is not inevitable—it is preventable. We need robust legislation, improved data collection, greater government accountability, a zero-tolerance culture, and increased funding for women’s rights organizations and institutional bodies,” said UN Women Executive Director, Sima Bahous. The report coincides with the start of the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign, which runs from November 25 to December 10. What is the UN planning to do to address the many religious/cultural teachings that boys are brought up believing. That men are superior to women. Men have more value. Women must be subservient, and if she is not, boys/men are encouraged to punish the women. I agree that women and children need support and safe places to go to when home is no longer the safe place it should be. So do men. However, I don't believe we need more organisations or government legislation or words like femicide, created to solely focus on women. I believe we have enough, perhaps the current organisations need more support from community. Individual men are not the main root cause of this problem. I believe we need a broader approach, one that encompasses men and women to both feel safe to commicate their fears and the emotions attached to those fears effectively. We all need to be encouraged to (and feel safe to) question religious/cultural/political leaders who continue to teach that some peoples lives are more valuable than others.

Another victim today again? How can we shift the narrative that perpetuates women as victims of dispossession and disenfranchisement, often triggered by their spouse's slightest provocation? This harmful dynamic frequently culminates in women emerging from toxic relationships with devastating losses, and nothing to show for the precious years invested. Let's unite to: * Support organizations empowering women to escape abuse. * Advocate for policy changes protecting women's rights. * Educate communities to recognize and prevent toxic relationships. Together, we can break the cycle and ensure women's dignity and agency. #Let's shatter the silence surrounding toxic relationships. #Share your story. #support survivors. #demand change.
