The business climate in #Alabama keeps garnering national attention. The state was recently recognized by CNBC as the most improved state for #business, bolstered by an ascending workforce. Alabama also has been named one of the top 20 states to do business in as well. Although the entire state has seen gains, rural Alabama has had a spate of economic gains in the past year. As a guy who was knocked for six during Covid and left with no job and no other option than to startup to survive, I can honestly say I now understand the unrelenting dedication and hard work that goes into running a business. Just managing to maintain delulu levels of optimism and living on nothing but beans and toast is something most people never consider when saying those fateful words; “I’m going to start a business” Even at the best of times It takes a helluva lot longer than you’d ever anticipate, And businesses have had to contend with everything from batflu to Brexit on top of that since 2019z The past few years have truly tested the grit, determination and resilience of many. Yet, almost every business seems to have emerged stronger and more driven than ever. The Wigan Business Awards will celebrate not just success, but the journey and effort behind it. Yesterday, I visited an Indian restaurant with my business friends. It’s called Viceroy, located in downtown Durham, North Carolina, USA. What caught my attention was the incredible vibe - many young people, a mix of nationalities, and a blend of business gatherings alongside friends. People were smiling, enjoying the food, and appreciating the friendly service. As we walked back home, I noticed that all the other restaurants on the street were experiencing a similarly vibrant atmosphere. Durham is growing fast. Duke University is bringing excitement to the town, and business is flourishing with entrepreneurial government programs like “Innovate Durham” and “Leveling Up.” New apartments are being built to meet the demand from people moving in. There are redevelopment projects underway to introduce more retail spaces and life science labs. Active community groups are generating economic opportunities for minority-owned businesses. Durham is truly leveling up, and it feels good to be in a town with such positive energy and an innovative mindset. Sometimes, we just need to walk around our neighborhood to get inspired by the good energy. No Kool-Aid was served this morning, but there really is something special about the city and county of Greenville, SC. …and not just because Furman University is located here. I left feeling very encouraged this morning with my Furman colleagues following the “State of the City and County” breakfast, sponsored in part by Furman, and hosted by the Greenville Chamber. Greenville Mayor Knox White and County Council Chairman Dan Tripp provided a local update while Federal Reserve Bank’s Laura Ullrich gave a regional economic overview. Here are my takeaways: ✅ Growth comes with big challenges. Shrinking has bigger challenges. ✅ Greenville’s growth on nearly all economic factors is double the national average. ✅ The ATL - GVL - CLT corridor is an insane economic power belt. ✅ Greenville continues to invest heavily in affordable housing, greenspace, and infrastructure – very real challenges that come with growth. ✅ The bookends of big industry and entrepreneurship remain important economic drivers. ✅ Last, but not least, people are proud to say “I’m from Greenville, SC” – and as a Greenville native, I say count me in.
