🎯 "But what's the ROI on that tradeshow?" 🎯 Every budget cycle, tradeshow ROI comes up. Mainly because tradeshows are a large investment, spanning from booth costs to staffing your event. In short, it’s no small investment. Here's the thing: Measuring the ROI of a tradeshow isn't as simple as counting the leads you collect at the booth. True ROI is about tracking the entire customer journey—from initial contact to conversion and beyond. Here’s how we did it. 1️⃣ Set Clear Objectives: Before the show even begins, define what success looks like. For this organization, we wanted to drive revenue. At the start of the season, we attributed a clear ROAS for the show. We benchmarked our number with the ROAS we were currently getting on digital ads, and then worked toward establishing a ROAS both the sales and marketing team felt comfortable achieving. 2️⃣ Measure Over Time: Tradeshows aren't a quick win. It can take weeks, months, or even longer for a lead to convert into a paying customer. We knew the average sales cycle for our industry was 6-9 months (with some jobs taking three years to close). To account for this, we built in revenue projections to evaluate at 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months. 3️⃣ Commit to Tracking: Measuring the results only worked if everyone bought into the goals and the process. Our team developed the system in Hubspot to assign leads to each show. The sales team committed to recording their related sales in the system. Then we built in follow-up meetings to track each show’s progress. 4️⃣ Optimize Future Strategy: The challenge with a long sales cycle is that you likely will have to book the next year’s show before all of your data is in. But having markers to evaluate the overall progress helped us determine which shows were on track to meet goals, and which were underperforming. The data allowed us to refine our strategy, leaning into shows that drove results. It also allowed us to see where our messaging was landing, pinpointing verticals we needed to revisit. "I love it that we can tell instantly which sponsors are using the virtual scanners for lead generation and how many people they are connecting with."
