Recommended read for #WildlifeTrade watchers and Central Asia conservationists, this report provides an unprecedented overview of the role Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan play as source, transit and demand countries for legally and illegally acquired wild species. From the charistmatic snow leopard to the more obscure medicinal leeches or unexpected tropical birds, this document is full of leads on what is needed to better monitor and regulate wildlife trade in the region. A great resource, many years in the making with painstaking data gathering from TRAFFIC, Fauna & Flora , ACBK — Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan and other national organisations.

We had the chance to attend a very fruitful and timely seminar on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea: Towards Peaceful Maritime Cooperation in Southeast Asia, organized by the Cambodian Center for Regional Studies on 19th February. UNCLOS outlines specific rights and obligations that a state party has while also help prevents illegal and unregulated fishing and promoting marine biodiversity of the sea. UNCLOS is an essential international regime that Cambodia must fully utilize to safeguard her maritime interests. Inevitably, It could greatly help Cambodia concerning its Overlapping Claims Area negotiations with Thailand in the Gulf.

🌾 To allow for a sustainable recovery, Ukraine must strike a careful balance between the immediate need to keep the economy running and long-term goals such as healthy ecosystems and equitable land distribution. To showcase the issues at stake, experts of Land Matrix Initiative analysed two land deals from the initiative's database. Read their report: https://lnkd.in/eJDCcjCZ 🚜 41% of Ukrainian exports came from the agro-industrial sector, and while the statistics have subsequently been distorted by the Russian invasion, agricultural exports are widely recognised as an important part of Ukraine’s economic stabilisation. To counter dwindling land resources and maintain agriculture as one of the country’s major economic pillars, the government has begun to promote the increased use of agricultural land in suitable and safe territories, which are mainly concentrated in the central and western regions of the country. Yet, this approach is not without problems, as the report argues, since the need for more agricultural land is deeply intertwined with the continuous rollout of land governance reforms in the last two decades – with far-reaching implications for environmental protection. The report was prepared with contributions by Ecoaction and the Ukrainian nature conservation group (UNCG). #SustainableAgriculture #RebuildUkraineGreen #EnvironmentProtection

🐝 Carpathian bees and bears must be equally protected on all sides of the borders between neighbouring countries. As should all of the unique Carpathian nature. This is exactly what the Carpathian Convention, which unites seven neighbouring countries including Ukraine, is concerned with. 👫 People who diligently work in challenging mountain conditions and preserve natural and cultural traditions should have well-being and equal rights and responsibilities, regardless of the borders between countries. This is the essence of the EU enlargement process and Ukraine’s integration into the European community. 🏔️ Our “Eurointegration of Ukraine: Carpathian Farmers on the Path to Sustainable Development” discussion platform brought together representatives of Ukrainian ministries responsible for euro integration processes in the fields of environment, climate, and agriculture and of the Directorate-General of the European Commission for Agriculture and Rural Development. Brief summary and materials of the event at the link 👉 https://lnkd.in/drb6iFpv *** ℹ️ This event was organized by Information Center “Green Dossier” in the frame of the project “Green and Inclusive Agricultural Policy – Steps Towards” in partnership with EU project “Institutional and Policy Reform for Smallholder Agriculture” (IPRSA). I want to express my gratitude to the Center for Russia, Eurasia and Southeastern Europe for publishing my research on #environmental #degradation in #Ukraine caused by #war. This is part of a #project conducted by the research trainees in order to analyze sources and information on a multitude of parameters affected due to the war activity.Environmental issues are the focus of my contribution to the research. An armed conflict can lead to the destruction of the natural environment and the people's lives. The emphasis on #international environmental #law in public discourse is a reminder of the #obligations and #rights that are affected and need to be respected and protected.

At the UN General Assembly #UNGA79 🇺🇳 in New York, the Prime Minister of the Republic of #Vanuatu, the Hon. Charlot Salwai, announced the historic proposal for a crime of #ecocide in front of the global community 🌱 Recently, Vanuatu, along with two of its Pacific Island neighbours, Fiji and Samoa, formally submitted a proposal to make #ecocide a crime at the International Criminal Court. Their intention is for #ecocide to become a standalone, fifth international crime, alongside the court’s four existing crimes: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. The proposal for a new international crime of ecocide aims to prevent and punish severe harms to nature, throwing a protective ring around biodiversity, climate, the future of the planet and all of us who rely on it for our health and livelihoods. Learn more about the proposal HERE: https://lnkd.in/ehthvy4r #StopEcocide
