The Falkirk Wheel is the world's only fully rotating boat lift, located in Tamfourhill, Falkirk, Scotland. This remarkable engineering feat connects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, allowing boats to be lifted 35 meters (approximately 115 feet) in a matter of minutes. Opened in 2002 as part of the Millennium Link project, the Falkirk Wheel was designed to replace an older system of 11 locks that had been in place since the 1930s. The innovative design not only serves a practical purpose but also stands as a striking modern landmark, attracting around 500,000 visitors annually. The wheel operates using a unique counterbalance system: when one gondola is lowered, the opposite gondola rises, maintaining equilibrium. This design requires only the power equivalent to that of eight domestic kettles to operate.
